Dr. Sujit Kumar presented on mitochondria structure and function. He discussed the different types of mitochondria within muscle cells, including interfibillar, subsarcolemmal, and pericapillary mitochondria. He then explained how ATP is generated through oxidative phosphorylation using the proton motive force across the inner mitochondrial membrane, driven by the electron transport chain pumping protons from the matrix to the intermembrane space. The proton gradient is then used by ATP synthase to phosphorylate ADP and produce ATP in the matrix.
