Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, affects 1.5% of adults and 5% of children. It occurs during the first third of sleep and causes people to act unconsciously for 30 seconds to 30 minutes without memory. Most actions are harmless like walking rooms, but some are dangerous like cooking, violence, or driving. There are no proven interventions to stop occurrences, but risks can be minimized by getting enough deep sleep, avoiding triggers, and having a relaxing routine. Sleepwalking is usually outgrown, but consulting a specialist is recommended if it persists to check for underlying issues.
