Beowulf was a noble hero from Geatland who represented the ideals of loyalty, courage, and fairness in Anglo-Saxon society. When he learns the Danes are suffering attacks from the monster Grendel, he volunteers to help as a way to repay the debt his father owed the Danish king. Beowulf defeats Grendel bare-handed, displaying great bravery. He later also fights and defeats Grendel's mother after she comes to retrieve Grendel's arm. Beowulf goes on to become king of the Geats and later saves his own people by slaying a dragon, demonstrating how his heroic actions impacted multiple nations.
