2. Description
Double valve replacement surgery is better known as heart valve replacement surgery.
It is performed to treat the heart by replacing a damaged valve with a healthy one. The
valve replacement keeps the heart safe and sound from further damage or infection.
The human heart consists of four valves: the mitral valve, the tricuspid valve, the
pulmonic valve and the aortic valve. These valves direct blood from and to the body
throughout the heart. A defect, disease, damage or infection of the heart leads to the
malfunction of any of the four valves.

Types of Valve Replacement
Aortic Valve Replacement
It is on the left side of the heart and supports as an outflow valve. It allows blood to release the left ventricle.
Normally, the aortic valve has three sections of tissue, known as leaflets. This is called a tricuspid valve. A
defective valve which has only two leaflets, so it’s called a bicuspid valve.
2. Mitral Valve Replacement
The mitral valve is on the left side of the heart. It allows blood flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle.
When the valve is very thin, it can make it difficult for blood to arrive. This may affect it to back up, beginning
pressure in the lungs. When the valve doesn’t close by properly, blood can outflow back to the lungs. This may
be due to a congenital defect, infection, or a degenerative disease.
The defective valve will be replaced with either a metal artificial valve or a biological valve. The metal valve will
last a lifetime but requires you to take blood thinners.
3. Double Valve Replacement
It is a replacement of the entire left side of the heart. This type of surgery is not as common as the others and
the mortality rate is slightly higher.
4. Pulmonary Valve Replacement
The pulmonary valve splits the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle. The job is to allow blood to flow from
the heart to the lungs. The need for pulmonary valve replacement is done for stenosis.
