1. A good technical writer is a good interface designer. 2. The interface design skills of a technical writer can be put to use in other interface design capacities: a) to help design the product; b) to move to another line of interface design work.
A presentation I gave back in mid-2012 on the UX process currently being employed at the time. A process that needed a significant overhaul. Everything is a work in progress.
GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR NON-DESIGNERS
Have you ever wondered what graphic designers know that makes their work look so great?
Our panel shares their secrets so that you can make your own posters, brochures and other print materials. Anyone can make effective and attractive materials with the right knowledge. You'll come away with tips and advice that can noticeably improve your desktop publishing or do-it-yourself design and a get better sense of when to use the talents of a trained graphic designer.
Panel:
Amy Allen-Muncey, Cober Evolving Solutions
Nathan Robertson, Communitech

Interfaces are the faces of your company. Companies hire UX designers to make their websites easy to use, consistent, intuitive, and clean. These same companies often don't care about their API design; apparently "it works" is all they aspire to. However, your API is an interface; another face for your company. If it's hard to use, inconsistent, non-intuitive, or ugly, annoying a developer could be the best case scenario; you might lose customers.
Here are 20 tips from a former developer turned technical writer who thinks that it's better to design a good API rather than simply document a bad API.

A brief 20 min talk I gave to the Head Start meetup (@HeadStartAus), introducing some Lean techniques to help them consider the customer throughout the product & biz development process.

Rapid Product Design Using Lean UX Methods [Tradecraft : May 2014]Kate Rutter
Product design starts with framing an idea that will be valuable for real people in the real world. In this 120 minute workshop, Tradecraft members practiced rapid techniques to envision a product concept that is driven by user needs. Using Lean Startup principles and these fun and rapid methods, they created a coherent, lo-fi product concept, including identifying the problem it solves for people and understanding the role it plays in customers’ lives. By identifying a key metric to indicate traction, they explored the idea in full. They wrapped up with practical, actionable (and simple!) next steps to propel the ideas forward. * This deck includes downloadable templates.
These methods were developed at Luxr. Learn more about Tradecraft at http://tradecrafted.com. Learn more about Luxr at http://luxr.co/.
LavaCon 2017 - Snakes and Ladders: Content Collaboration with Subject Matter ...Jack Molisani

Participants will leverage a planning framework and participate in an interactive process of identifying key project opportunities and risks as well as exploring their own project roadmap. In this workshop, the project scenario focuses on how a content management system can be leveraged to facilitate content collaboration with subject matter experts. The topic will be approached using the familiar board game of Snakes and Ladders.
Transitioning into UX: General Assembly Hong Kong 2015Ted Kilian
Talk given at General Assembly Hong Kong
Description:User experience is in high demand, so many people from related fields are considering transitioning into a UX career or adding UX to their portfolio of skills. Join us for a candid talk with Ted Killian, Asia Pacific General Manager and Chief Experience Officer for Brilliant Basics. We'll examine the key roles, aptitudes and skills at the heart of UX and how to make the most of your background in exploring the art and science of UX.
Great UX talent is hard to identify and even harder to recruit. As the industry embraces the importance of the user experience, masters of the craft can take their pick of jobs at companies ranging from Google and Facebook all the way down to tomorrow’s most world-changing startups. As if hiring wasn’t hard enough, making the wrong hire carries a huge cost in both money and time.
As the principal UX architect at Slide UX, Erin manages a team of designers who have worked and hired on both the client & agency sides. Leave this session with practical guidelines for when to hire in-house vs outsource, how to identify the type(s) of designers you need, and where to find them.
Talk given at StartupDay 2010 conference in Bellevue, WA.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
