3. IDEALISM-AN INTRODUCTION
• Idealism is the oldest philosophical thought.
• The word Idealism is derived from two distinct sources- the idea and the
ideal.
• Plato , father of Idealism believed that there are two worlds, first is the
spiritual or mental world, which is eternal ,permanent, regular and
universal whereas second is world of appearance, the world experienced
through sight, touch, smell, taste and sound which is changing and
imperfect.
4. • Idealism is that school of western philosophy which considers the universe
as created by God and accepts the spiritual world superior to material
world. It considers God as the ultimate reality and soul as the part of God
and propounds that the ultimate aim of human life is self-realization which
can be achieved by following moral laws.
• Idealists believe that striving for perfection is a desirable goal.
5. PRINCIPLES OF IDEALISM
o This Universe is created by God
The Idealists believe that there is certainly a creator of this universe,
and this creator has no beginning and no end and its form is spiritual.
o Spiritual world is superior to material world
Plato has divided this Universe into two worlds-world of ideas and
world of matter. According to him, this material world is only the expression
of the world of ideas.
6. o The Soul is a spiritual factor and God is the supreme soul
Some of the Idealists consider soul to be a part of God and some of
them consider it as an independent existence. But all of them hold that the
soul is without a beginning or an end.
o Man is the best creation of the world
Idealists consider man as the best creation of the world. They argue
that man possesses physical powers just like other creatures, besides he
possesses spiritual powers.
7. o Human Development depends on his physical and spiritual powers
According to Idealists there are two forms of knowledge- physical
and spiritual. They clarified that physical knowledge is begot by physical
power and spiritual knowledge is realized by spiritual power.
o The ultimate aim of human life is Self –realization or Attainment of God
Idealists consider human life important and purposeful. They believe
that the soul resides within man and this soul is abstract, eternal and infinite.
8. o For Self-realization or attainment of God, the attainment of spiritual
values truth, beauty and goodness is essential
Plato believed in three spiritual values- truth, beauty and goodness.
Truth, beauty and goodness are three layers of soul and God , that cannot be
separated from each other. Truth ,beauty and goodness are one and same.

and the self. Idealism believe that mind is real and matter is in sense a by
product.

thought.
➢Distinctive nature of man: Idealist believe that man is not a mere animal
and they are super creation which possesses dignity and distinctiveness.

therefore his education will remain incomplete.
• In the words of idealists man’s nature is spiritual and divine. A man can
realize himself only through education.
• According to Ross, the function of education is to help us in our exploration
