The Avro Arrow
Hello everyone, my “Do You Know ” presentation is about the CF-105 Avro Arrow. The Avro Arrow
was designed in the mid-1950s, it was built in Toronto, Ontario. The Avro Arrow was built to
replace the ageing CF-100 Canuck. The Canuck was a subsonic plane which means that it was not
as fast as the speed of sound.

           CF-100 Canuck CF-105 Avro Arrow
SPECIFICATIONS

The Avro Arrow specifications needed it to do the following, which no other plane could do.

             Combat Speed MACH 1.5

                 Ceiling 60,000 Feet

             Time to Ceiling 5 Minutes

Moving 2 G at Mach 1.5 at 50,000 Feet and
                                                         maintain current speed
THE AVRO ARROW FIRST’S

The Avro Arrow was an exciting plane, it had many first’s that paved the way for all future planes.

• Fist aircraft designed with digital computers
• First a/c to have fly-by-wire technology (electronic
  signal from stick and pedals)
• First a/c to have artificial feedback
• First a/c to be able to be flown from the ground
• First a/c to use titanium (a rare metal at the time)
• First a/c to have high pressure hydraulics
• First a/c to use ground mapping radar
THE AVRO ARROW’S FIRST FLIGHT

• The Avro Arrow’s first flight was on March 25th 1958. Before the first flight they
had to check the plane and the engines, they do this by performing taxi trials. They
started first with low speed trials on December 4th 1957 to make sure everything
was ok and then went to the high speed trials. On the first flight it took off at 9:51
am and lasted 35 minutes. The Avro Arrow’s first flight was succesful.
THE IROQUOIS ENGINE

• The main engine to power the Avro Arrow was called the Iroquois. This was a
brand new engine that was far superior to all other engines. The engine was
attached to a B-47 Bomber and the test’s were performed on this. The engine was
so powerful that the B-47 would twist in the air. Sadly the Avro Arrow was
cancelled so they never got to put the Iroquois engine in.
THE CANCELLATION

• On Friday, February 20th, 1959, Prime Minster Diefenbaker announced the termination of
Avro Arrow and Iroquois engine program. As a result 14,000 people lost there jobs. Then the
Diefenbaker Government ordered all planes, blueprints and information to be destroyed. This
day is also known as Black Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MY FINAL THOUGHT

A bad thing was that 14,000 people lost their jobs and it could have been someone in your
family. Everyone felt really sad because of 2 things.
• First thing is that all those people lost their jobs
• Secondly, is we will never know how succesful the Avro Arrow could have been

THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE CANCELLED IT!!!!!!!

I hope you enjoyed my “Do You Know” , Thank You and Goodbye
