18. RE-PROGRAM YOUR NEGATIVE SELF TALK Change the tone to GOOFY OR SILLY Turn down the volume or hit the mute button Drown it out Add a positive onto the end of a negative
As tiny babies all we received were positive love and encouragement. Think about it.............when a tiny child is learning to walk, do you hear their parent or carer scream at them “you silly idiot, get up and do it again?” Of course not, they gently place the child up on their feet, and lovingly encourage them to give it another go. As tiny children we could do no wrong. We stuck our finger up our nose, and they thought we were cute, we farted and they laughed, we felt special and knew all of our needs were important! But somewhere around 18 months of age that all changed, when we received our first negative comment or experience.
Because our critical voice has had plenty of practice, it’s much easier to put a positive onto the end of a negative than to try replacing it all together. And there are 3 wonderful words that can help with that. Let’s take a look at them now.
This is absolutely adorable! And gets the message across in a humorous and memorable way!! Brilliant!
