Educational vs. Entertainment
The whole issue about Education vs. Entertainment, in my opinion, is a
little outdated. But, for the sake of the people who keep on questioning this
argument, this matter persists to live.
Education is the knowledge acquired through learning and instruction. It
is future oriented and its purpose is to make us develop and grow in every
possible way. On the other hand, Entertainment is a different thing. It is
something that amuses us or makes us interested. Knowing the qualities of what
entertainment can do is vital. It adds a whole new dimension when combined
with education.
Today , where technology is most used to provide instruction for us to
learn, a simple and straightforward education will not work. It will be boring
and it will not be absorbed by most of the learners. This is where entertainment
comes in. By using the two side by side, we can create something which can be
appreciated by the learners especially kids. We can hit two birds from one stone.
Using the quality of entertainment, that amuses and maintains our interest on the
topic, and the beneficial quality of education which is to make us learn. The most
boring of lessons and topics can be revamped and be as much interesting as
other things.
2. The CD that we reviewed was on Encyclopedic Reference. From all of the
softwares that are available, we decided to review on Britannica’s “Encyclopedia
Britannica 2006 Ultimate Reference Suite DVD”.
The software was easy to grasp and is very intuitive for something that
keeps an ocean of information inside. It’s interface is clean and uncluttered and
only provides the most important parts of articles. The search box was very
useful and was able to find proper results from my inputs. It uses a tab-based
display which not only makes the software attractive, but also useable. For it’s
version, 2006, it contains a lot of relevant things supported by bibliographies and
written by the best scholars in their respective fields. You can easily find what
you are looking for in just a few clicks.
It is far better geared to tackle the informational needs of adults and
professionals rather than children. Although it can be used by kids, a separate
software has been designed for them.
The overall rating we gave was a 3 out of a 4. True that it lives to its name
but we cannot deny that every program has their flaws. Since the software that
we bought was pirated, it limits us to what it can do more. It was supposed to
have interaction between the software and it’s website to provide more updates
and further information about the topics but apparently wasn’t available on our
copy. Despite it’s information, the software eats up a lot of memory which can be
a bit sluggish for other computers. Other than that, it does what it does and does
it sufficiently.
