❖ Diverticulitis is the inflamation of “sacs” or diverticli In the colon
❖ it is a disease found in humans

3. WHO DISCOVERED IT AND HOW
WAS IT NAMED?
First discovered and studied in 1849, its recognition increased with the
development of the barium enema
❖ not one certain person who discovered diverticulis
❖ Divertucla- means the formation of pouches in the abdomin
❖ -Itis means inflamation

❖ Appendicitis
❖ Irritable bowel syndrome
❖ Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
❖ Bowel obstruction
❖ Perforation by a foreign body

5. TYPE OF CONDITION
Most doctors say genetic (depends on who you ask)
people with collogen disorders are most likely to get it.
studdies show that if your grandparents have it you most likley will

❖ diverticulitus is not transmitted its inherited.
❖ seasons have no effect
❖ risk factors include:
• age
• obesity
• smoking
• lack of exercise
• diets low in fiber and high in animal fat

❖ diverticulitis effects the digestive tract
❖ Digestive system: The system of organs responsible for getting
food into and out of the body and for making use of food to keep the
body healthy.
❖ diverticulitus creates a blockage in this tract

❖ a person with diverticulitis requires surgery
• the surgeon will take the small seccion of the tract out
❖ triggers to avoid:
• seeds (all kinds)
• nuts
• corn
• popcorn
(anything that might get stuck)

11. SYMPTOMS & DAILY LIFE
❖ diverticulitis occurs in "flare ups"
❖ symptoms include:
• pain in the abdomen
• bright red or maroon blood in the stool.
• fever
• nausea
• vomiting
• chills
• constipation
• (less often, diarrhea).

❖ the tests you take to find out it you have it:
• Complete blood count (CBC)
• Urinalysis
• Abdominal X-ray
• The digital rectal exam
• The fecal occult blood test
• colonoscopy

❖ Ciprofloxacin
• Ciprofloxacin fights bacteria in the body.
❖ Bactrim
• antibiotics that treat different types of infection caused by bacteria.
❖ Various pain medications
• to deal with the uncomfortablity and the pain

❖ Total hospital charges were more than $6,600 higher with
colectomy for diverticular disease
❖ even higher for cost, complications, and mortality.
❖ Medication costs about $350 for 60 pills with out insurance

❖ there is a new drug that doctors are testing on the patients to see if it
works called rifaimin
❖ it is not yet approved by the FDA
❖ my mother is one of these test subjects

❖ i chose this disease because my mom and family friend both have
this disease
❖ the most interesting thing that i learned was that there is still
unknown things about the disease like wither its genetic or not.
❖ my mother was the most helpful sorce of information

problem originates?
❖ it is important for everyone to realize just how common this disease
