Diversity in Sport evidence - Supported Learning Fitness Initiative
- 1. Supported Learning Fitness Initiative City of Glasgow College Diversity Awards - Herald Diversity in Sport Category
- 3. Overview • Who? Supported Learning students who identify as being on the Autism spectrum with some others with additional learning difficulties, sensory or physical impairment. • HNC / HND Health & Fitness Students who undertake work experience teaching sport and fitness to specific client groups • Student Engagement Team who aim to deliver Dynamic Learning Initiatives that are cross curricular and aim to offer students innovative and new ways to learn and share their skills that they have previously learnt in class and develop key interpersonal skills.
- 4. Supported Learning Fitness Initiative Aims • Offer sports and fitness sessions to students who may not engage in regular physical activity • Widen access for students to engage with college sport and fitness provisions • Offer actual work experience opportunities that mirror industry requirements • Boost achievement and retention of students participating in the project
- 5. The Process Stage 1 • Pre – Respect workshop delivered to Health and Fitness Students • Pre – Fitness Introduction workshop delivered to Supported Learning students Stage 2 • Health and Fitness Students coach Supported Learning students to take part in sport and physical activity for four weeks • Activities include: dance, football, high energy team games, circuts, dodge-ball, basketball, circuits, strength & flexibility exercises etc. Stage 3 • Students confidence in their own abilities grows • The Fitness Initiative is offered and delivered for the full Supported Education cohort, coached by Health and Fitness students
