Distracted driving occurs when a driver's attention is diverted away from the road due to activities like using a cell phone, eating, reading, or interacting with passengers. There are three main types of distractions - visual, taking eyes off the road; manual, taking hands off the wheel; and cognitive, taking the mind off driving. The human mind can only focus on one task at a time as it switches attention sequentially between tasks, so distractions increase the risk of accidents by making drivers inattentive. To avoid distractions, drivers should not use cell phones, eat, drink, read, have emotional conversations, text, watch videos or listen to music while operating a vehicle.
