Social Perception Research Topic Proposal
Social personal perception is the way a person perceives and understands issues. This is an interesting topic to do research because people are different, and they perceive issues from an array of viewpoints. For my research proposal, the topic I would like to investigate is the determinants of social perception. My main objective is to identify and determine the various factors that determine how people perceive issues. I have seen how people, cultures, nationalities can perceive the same action in different ways, such as kneeling during the National Anthem at professional football games. Upon preliminary research, some literature that I read claimed that both internal and external factors determine a person’s perception. My research shall highlight on pointing out the various internal and external factors, as well as clarifying how these factors shapes and forms the perception that the person show.

Cultural differences exist in how people communicate with each other. You may be familiar with lexicons (what people call themselves and others), pragmatics (how language is used and understood), verbal and non-verbal communication styles; encoding; and decoding. Understanding how cultures communicate is important to effectively communicate within a multicultural environment. For example, imagine if you moved to a state or territory of the Middle East. After reading the introductory material on the home page, delve more deeply into three different typologies—or ways of classifying cultures. The module starts with a simple dichotomous typology—individualism/collectivism—expands to Hofstede’s six dimensions of culture, and rounds out with a more impressionistic framework—that of Gannon’s cultural metaphors.
Individualism/Collectivism
Perhaps the oldest construct in thinking about dimensions of culture is the dichotomy of individualism and collectivism. It is a good place to start in understanding cultural dimensions, because it represents one of the more readily apparent characteristics of a culture—the degree to which members of a society think of themselves as individuals separate and distinct from their fellows or as a part of a group that is greater and more significant than the self.
Social scientists have studied the distinction between societies that value obligations to the group over the individual (or vice versa) for nearly 100 years. Beginning with the work of Emile Durkeim, the construct of individualism/collectivism was popularized in modern cross-cultural study largely by the work of Harry Triandis and colleagues.
What follows is an extensive review of the topic that will give you a thorough understanding of the characteristics of individualistic and collectivistic cultures and help you understand how leadership styles and practices vary between the two. In addition, the article discusses how these two orientations can disparately affect economic development, organizational culture, group dynamics, job design and rewards, conflict, and communication. Later parts of the article cover research and methodological concerns—this section is optional.

Hofstede’s Dimensions of Culture
Currently, the most widely used framework for classifying types of cultures is Geert Hofstede’s dimensions of culture. Hofstede, a Dutch social psychologist, once worked with IBM International, where he became interested in cross-cultural influences on work behavior. In 1980, Hofstede published his groundbreaking work, Culture’s Consequences. In this work, Hofstede proposed four cultural dimensions, each forming a bipolar continuum. How do reasonable people go along with unreasonable ideas, including mass suicide? How do charismatic leaders create their own “culture” within a specific situation and setting and then bring followers along? It is unsettling to consider that researchers have found that almost anyone will obey orders if placed in the right situation.
For this Assignment, you will explore the role of conformity and social influence in the dynamics of a cult. Keep in mind the definition of “culture” as you examine how a powerful leader can create a distinct culture, or “cult,” that others join and follow: a set of attitudes, behaviors, and symbols shared by a large group of people (Shiraev & Levy, 2017, p. 4) .
To prepare:
Review the sections in Chapter 10 of your course text, beginning with “Universal Interaction” (p. 301), and pay particular attention to the content on conformity, obedience, leadership, and social power.

Abstract: The significance of cultural influence on business has been widely recognized in both
academic and business circles. A number of authors suggest that an anthropological approach is the
most appropriate way to study cultural factors and assess their impact on an organizational
environment. This investigation draws attention to several important cultural issues in business
utilizing an anthropological perspective. It probes the relationship between culture and human
behavior, between organizational values and organizational behavior, and identifies several effective
methods for managing cultural differences that often permeate an organization’s workforce.

INTRODUCTION
The core for anthropology as a social science is
about culture and its relationship with human behavior.
Although there are many different definitions of culture
by scholars from different fields, such as political
scientists, historians, psychologists, anthropologists,
sociologists and so on, the common points by cross-
field scholars are clear. The essential core of culture
consists of traditional ideas that are historically derived
and selected and especially their attached values. On
the one hand culture systems may be considered as
products of action or as conditioning elements of
further action. It consists of patterns, explicit and
implicit, of and for behavior acquired and transmitted
by symbols, constituting the distinctive achievements of

Individualism/Collectivism
Perhaps the oldest construct in thinking about dimensions of culture is the dichotomy of individualism and collectivism. It is a good place to start in understanding cultural dimensions, because it represents one of the more readily apparent characteristics of a culture—the degree to which members of a society think of themselves as individuals separate and distinct from their fellows or as a part of a group that is greater and more significant than the self.
Social scientists have studied the distinction between societies that value obligations to the group over the individual (or vice versa) for nearly 100 years. Beginning with the work of Emile Durkeim, the construct of individualism/collectivism was popularized in modern cross-cultural study largely by the work of Harry Triandis and colleagues.
What follows is an extensive review of the topic that will give you a thorough understanding of the characteristics of individualistic and collectivistic cultures and help you understand how leadership styles and practices vary between the two. In addition, the article discusses how these two orientations can disparately affect economic development, organizational culture, group dynamics, job design and rewards, conflict, and communication. Later parts of the article cover research and methodological concerns—this section is optional.

Hofstede’s Dimensions of Culture
Currently, the most widely used framework for classifying types of cultures is Geert Hofstede’s dimensions of culture. Hofstede, a Dutch social psychologist, once worked with IBM International, where he became interested in cross-cultural influences on work behavior. In 1980, Hofstede published his groundbreaking work, Culture’s Consequences. In this work, Hofstede proposed four cultural dimensions, each forming a bipolar continuum. He argued that cultures can be measured along these dimensions, and that differences in behavior and customs can be explained by mapping these dimensions. The original dimensions were:

Understanding the impact of diversity on an individual’s cognitive, physical, and social-emotional developmental processes requires an examination of a multitude of characteristics, including gender, race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, etc. In addition, behavior within a group is important to examine, along with the similarities and differences of behaviors and attitudes across groups. The goal of understanding the impact of diversity is not to determine whether one group is inferior to another, but to gain an appreciation of the breadth and depth of variability in human behavior. Cross-cultural investigation allows for the testing of theoretical concepts and predictions to evaluate their generalizability (Jensen, 2012). Another outcome of studying the results of cross-cultural research is that, as a psychology professional, you will be better equipped to empathize with and advocate for those you will be serving.

Write a 3–4-page assessment in which you examine the relationship between behavior and attitude and apply one theory to support your position.
Attitudes help guide behavior, although sometimes people act in ways that contradict their attitudes (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014). Some have said that attitudes are directly related to behavior; others say there is no strong relationship between attitude and behavior. Examining theories of how people develop attitudes and perceptions can lead to heightened self-awareness.
CONTEXT
The self is a complex and marvelous participant in the social world. There are three main components of the self: self-knowledge, interpersonal self, and agent self. The self is a vital means of gaining social acceptance and for participation in culture. But is there such a thing as a "true self"?

Assignment 1: Conformity and Social Influence
How do reasonable people go along with unreasonable ideas, including mass suicide? How do charismatic leaders create their own “culture” within a specific situation and setting and then bring followers along? It is unsettling to consider that researchers have found that almost anyone will obey orders if placed in the right situation.
For this Assignment, you will explore the role of conformity and social influence in the dynamics of a cult. Keep in mind the definition of “culture” as you examine how a powerful leader can create a distinct culture, or “cult,” that others join and follow: a set of attitudes, behaviors, and symbols shared by a large group of people (Shiraev & Levy, 2017, p. 4) .
To prepare:
Review the sections in Chapter 10 of your course text, beginning with “Universal Interaction” (p. 301), and pay particular attention to the content on conformity, obedience, leadership, and social power.
Your Week 5 Learning Resources provide information on three different cults and their leaders in recent U.S. history: Jim Jones and the People’s Temple, David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, and Marshall Applewhite and Heaven’s Gate. You are encouraged to choose one as the focus of your Assignment. Additional Learning Resources provide insights on the dynamics of a cult.

If you prefer to choose a different leader and group, check with your instructor first for approval.
For your focus leader, review and analyze the Module 5 Learning Resources provided and additional resources you find in the Walden Library or in other sources, including reputable websites, to complete this Assignment.
For your focus leader and group, think about how each may exemplify the concepts of conformity, obedience, and social power:
How the leader builds a “culture” with its own rules outside of the larger culture
What elements compel followers to conform, such as charisma, isolation, and/or fear
Use the Learning Resources provided and those you find to analyze your leader and followers as an example of a situational development of a “culture” through conformity, obedience, and social power.

a 2 - to 3-page research paper in which you do the following:
Describe the leader and followers who are the subject of your analysis.
Analyze how the leader created a distinct “culture” for followers and what elements of a culture were present in the setting.
Analyze how the leader used social power to influence followers.

Explain how your chosen leader’s use of social influence applies to the leaders in your culture (e.g., local, academic, political, or other types of leaders you identify).

Abstract: The significance of cultural influence on business has been widely recognized in both
academic and business circles. A number of authors suggest that an anthropological approach is the
most appropriate way to study cultural factors and assess their impact on an organizational
environment. This investigation draws attention to several important cultural issues in business
utilizing an anthropological perspective. It probes the relationship between culture and human
behavior, between organizational values and organizational behavior, and identifies several effective
methods for managing cultural differences that often permeate an organization’s workforce.

INTRODUCTION
The core for anthropology as a social science is
about culture and its relationship with human behavior.
Although there are many different definitions of culture
by scholars from different fields, such as political
scientists, historians, psychologists, anthropologists,
sociologists and so on, the common points by cross-
field scholars are clear. The essential core of culture
consists of traditional ideas that are historically derived
and selected and especially their attached values. On
the one hand culture systems may be considered as
products of action or as conditioning elements of
further action. It consists of patterns, explicit and
implicit, of and for behavior acquired and transmitted
by symbols, constituting the distinctive achievements of
human groups, including their embodiments in artifacts
(Kroeber and Kluckhohn, 1952).
