What kinds of diversity do you believe strengthens a group or organization?
There are many elements to discuss when you're talking about diversity. In a workplace
there are strengths and weaknesses that can help an organization, so it is imperative to
have a diverse work team that work well with each and listen to others' opinions. I am
pondering over this question and what comes to mind is that cultural diversity in a team
or group is beneficial and important, especially when it comes to teamwork.
Researching this from [Kahn,2015], which states, " Having cultural diversity in a team
does improve performance, particularly where creativity, problem-solving, and decision-
making skills are concerned". It is also important to have other elements of diversity,
such as ages, different types of skill sets, and of experience, and with all these
contributing factors the team will remain strong.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a diverse work team?
When your apart of a diverse work team it starts with the training when your strengths
and weaknesses are exploited, such as your temperament, thinking and learning styles,
as well as what will be required of you within the team. The most noticeable down fall of
diversity in a team is social stress, trust, conflict, and communication. This can be a
disadvantage to the team if a member is suffering from these psychological conditions,
[Kahn, 2015].
Diversity in a workplace is very challenging and ongoing but everyone is capable of
learning and receive the fruits of their labor so building a positive work environment,
trust, teamwork, good communication skills, and solving problems is the glue to holding a
team together, [Your Career, 2022].

Cultural Competence is an essential aspect of counselor training. In order to begin to understand a culture, it is essential to have sustained interaction with the culture. For the final project for this course, each student will be responsible for actively investigating multicultural issues in the “real world,” by gradually immersing in a culture different from their own. The immersion project will involve experiential learning about other cultures. The intent is to increase your knowledge and sensitivity to other cultures.
In order to complete this project successfully, you will need to work on it throughout the entire course. As part of the project, each of you will select a culture different from your own and participate in at least three distinct cultural immersion experiences/observations within that culture. The idea is to gradually immerse into the different culture over the course of the term. You may use the list of suggestions below to guide your immersion process or you can devise some ideas of your own. It is essential that each experience is qualitatively different from that of your own culture and that the experiences gradually become more involved directly with the culture of choice.
1. The activities you select must include active involvement in the culture/activity. In other words, you may “observe” the culture but you may not limit the activity to passive observation. Make sure that each activity involves interaction with members of the culture, either through active participation in the activity itself or through conversations with members of the culture. Of course your third activity, the personal dialogue, already requires your active participation.
2. Submit a written narrative of your immersion activities. The paper will be 8-10 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font), This paper must include the following elements:

What was your experience of completing the implicit bias test? Which test did you choose,
and why?
Reflecting on the self-awareness test was interesting. It allowed me to think deeply to give a clear
and precise answer. The questions were occasionally considered but never asked how I might I feel
about a particular topic. I took the ADDRESSING-GSA- Self-Assessment test to recognize the
cultural characteristics of individuals. As social workers, it is essential to adapt and understand
people from all different cultural backgrounds. The result from the test shows what areas I was
more dominant in and what areas I was less dominant in. The results were not surprising to me,
and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better.
Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be
willing to work on those areas.
What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s
activities?
The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and
digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension
of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great
learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since
this is the class that it is being taught. Learning the dynamics of culture and diversity will be a
great asset as the social work profession will be working with individuals of all backgrounds.
Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about;
this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have
to be.
I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse
group of people that I call my second family from home. The people that I would like to learn

Description of Diversity and/or Cultural Competence Considerations in your Agency
Cultural competence is extremely important in the social work profession. The text describes cultural competence as “awareness, knowledge, and skills social workers need to develop in order to deliver culturally appropriate services” (Danso, 2015). Culturally competence can commonly be obtained through culturally sensitive training or being aware of one’s own cultural biases. Some may even find that working with various cultures may increase one’s ability to remain culturally competent.
At my agency, we have a culturally diverse staff and we work with clients of all ages and races. When conducting intakes or assessments, clients are treated with respect no matter the culture. There are times where we have to modify intakes or assessments, or treatments as a means to respect the culture of the client. Clinicians at my field placement are also obliged to always advocate for diversity within client treatment, and they are sure to engage with every individual in a way that is respectful to the client’s cultural background.
Reflection of Agency Learning Agreement
Of the core competencies presented by CSWE, the second competency pertains to diversity and cultural competence. The competency is simply titled ‘Engage diversity and difference in practice’ and focuses on ensuring that the importance of diversity and difference is applied and communicated, as well as engaging clients as it pertains to their culture. Also, social workers should apply self-awareness to manage personal biases when working with clients of a different culture.
The learning agreement highlights this competency as a means to ensure that student interns are aware of the importance of engaging in diversity. Student interns should be like social workers in practicing without bias, and the learning agreement goals help students work towards achieving this competency. In order to fulfil such competency, student interns should first be aware of any biases or reservations they may have in working with clients whom are different. In addition to such, interns should also be mindful of daily interactions with various clients and ensure to communicate and behave in a respectful manner despite differences.

You needed to apply two theories this week. You might have used social identity theory to explain your feeling of comfort around those like you in terms of the ethnicity and social status. You might also have used Interactionist theory to explain the process of cultural transmission of Hispanic norms and values, especially those that apply to Hispanic males as well as to explain why skin color may be significant in the U.S. while it is not as significant in Latin American countries. Interactionists would also suggest that taking one’s time may be interpreted as being lazy in the US and this might result in conflict. Our culture shapes our perceptions and in turn, this influences how we react to those who are not like us in certain respects. Your APA format is very good overall. I opted for “This Land is My Land” topic due to my insightful interest to explore historical events related to patriotism and balancing power between Europeans and Natives in situations such as trade negotiations. The trade aspect drove me to be specific on the focus question that need to address the impacts of Pequot War to Europeans and Natives. In this case, the contact of both had profound effect where balance of power shifted overnight from natives to Europeans. My choice is therefore grounded on the enthusiasm to discover more knowledge into this particular aspect.

What was your experience of completing the implicit bias test? Which test did you choose,
and why?
Reflecting on the self-awareness test was interesting. It allowed me to think deeply to give a clear
and precise answer. The questions were occasionally considered but never asked how I might I feel
about a particular topic. I took the ADDRESSING-GSA- Self-Assessment test to recognize the
cultural characteristics of individuals. As social workers, it is essential to adapt and understand
people from all different cultural backgrounds. The result from the test shows what areas I was
more dominant in and what areas I was less dominant in. The results were not surprising to me,
and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better.
Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be
willing to work on those areas.
What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s
activities?
The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and
digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension
of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great
learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since
this is the class that it is being taught. Learning the dynamics of culture and diversity will be a
great asset as the social work profession will be working with individuals of all backgrounds.

I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse

Description of Diversity and/or Cultural Competence Considerations in your Agency
Cultural competence is extremely important in the social work profession. The text describes cultural competence as “awareness, knowledge, and skills social workers need to develop in order to deliver culturally appropriate services” (Danso, 2015). Culturally competence can commonly be obtained through culturally sensitive training or being aware of one’s own cultural biases. Some may even find that working with various cultures may increase one’s ability to remain culturally competent.
At my agency, we have a culturally diverse staff and we work with clients of all ages and races. When conducting intakes or assessments, clients are treated with respect no matter the culture. There are times where we have to modify intakes or assessments, or treatments as a means to respect the culture of the client. Clinicians at my field placement are also obliged to always advocate for diversity within client treatment, and they are sure to engage with every individual in a way that is respectful to the client’s cultural background.
Reflection of Agency Learning Agreement
Of the core competencies presented by CSWE, the second competency pertains to diversity and cultural competence. The competency is simply titled ‘Engage diversity and difference in practice’ and focuses on ensuring that the importance of diversity and difference is applied and communicated, as well as engaging clients as it pertains to their culture. Also, social workers should apply self-awareness to manage personal biases when working with clients of a different culture.
The learning agreement highlights this competency as a means to ensure that student interns are aware of the importance of engaging in diversity. Student interns should be like social workers in practicing without bias, and the learning agreement goals help students work towards achieving this competency. In order to fulfil such competency, student interns should first be aware of any biases or reservations they may have in working with clients whom are different. In addition to such, interns should also be mindful of daily interactions with various clients and ensure to communicate and behave in a respectful manner despite differences.

Are Hispanics considered a minority only due to their numbers? Other relevant concepts that might apply to what you’ve written here might be symbolic interaction and cultural differentiation.
You needed to apply two theories this week. You might have used social identity theory to explain your feeling of comfort around those like you in terms of the ethnicity and social status. You might also have used Interactionist theory to explain the process of cultural transmission of Hispanic norms and values, especially those that apply to Hispanic males as well as to explain why skin color may be significant in the U.S. while it is not as significant in Latin American countries. Interactionists would also suggest that taking one’s time may be interpreted as being lazy in the US and this might result in conflict. Our culture shapes our perceptions and in turn, this influences how we react to those who are not like us in certain respects. Your APA format is very good overall. If the information cited is quoted material, then you also need to include the page number on which the quoted material is located.

I opted for “This Land is My Land” topic due to my insightful interest to explore historical events related to patriotism and balancing power between Europeans and Natives in situations such as trade negotiations. In this case, the contact of both had profound effect where balance of power shifted overnight from natives to Europeans. - 1. discussion in cultural awareness in social work practice In order to become a practitioner who addresses the diverse needs of your clients in a sensitive and respectful manner, you must be dedicated to continued education around the needs and experiences of different groups, religions, ethnicities, and other populations. The first step is to identify any personal biases and perceptions you might have about other cultures. From a broader perspective, how might an individual’s culture, race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation affect how society perceives and treats them? Which potential social structures may perpetuate the oppression and marginalization of certain groups? The most important attribute you can bring to this topic is an open mind and a willingness to learn about others unlike yourself and ask how they want to be treated by you as a social worker. In this Discussion, you consider these topics in relation to a case study depicting issues in cultural competence. To prepare: Review this week’s Learning Resources, including the videos, and then reflect on the following: What is your definition of cultural competency? What skills do you think are necessary for attaining cultural competence as a social worker working with that population? What is the difference between having knowledge about a cultural group and engaging with an individual from the stance of cultural humility? Then, search the Walden Library for peer-reviewed article(s) that support the skills you selected.
- 2. By Day 3 Post: Provide your definition of cultural competence. Explain the skills you think are necessary for developing cultural competence as a social worker when working with Eboni.
