Giving Directions
a) Using prepositions + nouns:
- opposite (the school)
- near (the restaurant)
- next to (the bank)
- between (the post office & the cinema)
- in front of (the hospital)
- behind (the coffee shop)
- at the end of (the street)
- on the corner of (the bank)
- on the (left/right)
- at the (crossroads / roundabout)
- across ( the street)
- under (the bridge)
b) Using expressions:
- go + direction (right, left, down, up, through,
straight on, along/down, past the )
e.g. Go through the park and past the police.
- turn + right/left
e.g. At the end of the street , turn right.
- take + road name
e.g. Take 5th Avenue.
- stay on + road name for + distance or time
(when driving)
e.g. Stay on Roses Street for 5 minutes.
- Follow +road name + time /until
e.g. Follow Roses Street until you get to the
church.
c) Estimating time or distance
Questions:
-How far is it ?
-Is it far from here ?
-How long does it take to get to …?
Answers:
-It’s not very far.
-It’s only about … minutes.
-It won’t take you very long to get there.
-It will take you approximately … minutes to get there.
Dialogue:
• Jack: Excuse me. Could you tell me where the National Bank is?
• Anna: The National Bank? Oh, I’m afraid that you are quite far from that.
• Jack: What? I’m lost? I thought I was near!
• Anna: Oh no. National Bank is in Saigon Road on Nguyen Street!
• Jack: Could you please tell me how to get there?
• Anna: Hmmm. Let me see... Go straight on this road, turn right at the traffic lights...
• Jack: Is that all?
• Anna: Hmmm… Hold on. Let me think... Ah! After that, go past the big church and turn right
into Saigon Road. And...
• Jack: Okay. And?
• Anna: Opposite Saigon Road is the Nguyen Street. You will see the Vina Mall. It’s huge.
National Bank is next to it. You surely won’t be lost anymore.
• Jack: Got it! But is that the quickest way of getting there?
• Anna: Yes, it is.

• Anna: I’m sorry I don’t have.
