Unethical Case Study: Dilemma at the Devil’s Den
Two discussion points will be focused in this writing:
• What is Susan's dilemma, and why does she feel this way?
• What are the suggested solutions?
I. Dilemma causes:
Susan feels that she should report the unethical case at her company based on her upbringing
and understanding of fiscal responsibility as a finance major. She’s now experiencing a
dilemma between this responsibility and her fear of being frowned upon without any actual
change as well as the desire of becoming a student manager herself. Thus, by reason of keeping
her job but also stopping the behaviors, what should Susan do?
II. Direct Stakeholders Involved:
1. Those who work on the night shift and on the weekend (employees and managers)
2. Their friends
3. College Food Service (CFS)
III. Main Root Causes of the issue:
• Low wage
• Lack of responsibility from managers to get employees to do their works
• Unlocked storage door
• CFS provides no job trainings and regulations
• Inexperience of employees
• Poor corrective actions
There has been a poor cycle of performing and thereby forming a culture of the issue.

IV. Strategy:
A direct confrontation of the situation would be by speaking with one full-time manager who she
has personal contact with about the problem. One strategy to reduce such behaviors would be to
lock the storage door in order to create an uncomfortable moment and more barriers for taking
extra foods home. However, the solution is not sustainable and not a way to change the behaviors.
A complement method would be creating an anonymous communication with the CFS, who has
the authority, to report the case via email.
CFS should pay close attention to and study the causes in order to apply right actions, for example:
• creating a real working environment by provide
• providing student employers both a work ethics training (respect for rules and pride in their
jobs) and a job training-how to manage and control staffs, sense of responsibility…
• forming a working guidelines and regulations
• punishments and motivations
• considering offering higher wages
A good strategy can end up eaten by the bad culture. Thus, such strategy must aim to change the
culture itself.
