This document discusses digitizing historical records to enable quantitative analysis of populations. It focuses on a project analyzing records of convicts transported from Britain to Australia, including names, ship details, sentences, offenses and descriptions. The project aims to encode records in XML, build a searchable database, trace descendants, and explore lives of disadvantaged Australians through history.
