Seric Systems provided digital skills training to residents at Townhead Community Centre in Glasgow. They organized one-on-one training sessions over 6 days to help people with tasks like using computers, the internet, email and job applications. Volunteers from Seric and other organizations like IBM and universities helped provide the training. The feedback was positive, with many residents returning for a second session, and plans were made to expand the program to other areas.

National broadband champion update 13 nov 2012Helen Thompson
Australia's National Broadband Champions participated in the National Telework Forum in Melbourne on 5 December 2012. They also met with the Senator Stephen Conroy.
In discussion the follow day the Broadband Champions reflected on their involvement in 2012. Discussions with DBCDE and NBN Co representatives explored how broadband will benefit specialist fields from medicine through to business and education.
A presentation made to the Commonwealth of Learning, Vancouver Canada April 25, 2013 giving an update on the current status of community based ICT for development initiatives (Community Informatics).
Cora is currently working as an Executive Librarian in DeValera Library, Ennis having previously worked for 13 years as Executive Librarian in Westside Library, Galway. Cora has also worked in academic libraries and as an IT trainer in the IT sector. Her professional interests are varied and they include reading & literature, new emerging technologies, community participation and the future of libraries. Cora is currently undertaking the competent communicator programme as part of Toastmasters International.
From 11 to 13 February, 2020 I was at the kick-off meetings for the Digital Transformation Centers (DTC) project at the ITU in Geneva, Switzerland. The primary function of DTCs are to deliver digital skills training to enhance digital literacy and foster uptake of digital tools among those at the bottom of the social pyramid and to improve livelihoods, and thus, bridge the third level of digital divide. Also, DTCs aim to improve the capacity of policymakers to design and implement digital skills programmes, and further conduct them to ensure scalability and self-sustainability in digital skills capacity development.
This is my presentation on digital skills scaling.

Better, faster, more: Strategies for the next generation of broadband
Federation University Australia through the Centre for eCommerce and Communications (CeCC) is delivering a dynamic awareness and skills development program. The Centre assists businesses and not-for-profit entities to leverage opportunities from broadband technologies and deliver learning programs to internal university stakeholders. One of the trends predicted by international experts in digital communication is the transition from text based information to content that is viewed spatially, in 3D and other visual formats. Helen will discuss:
• How next generation broadband creates new opportunities
• Strategies: Using visual storytelling to deliver the message
• Tools to create increased audience engagement

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

SERIC: COMMUNITY
BRIEF
As part of Seric’as charitable works
and Digital Participation policy we
look for the opportunity to use our
technical skills to help increase the
digital skills of the nation and also
to support charities.
Townhead Community centre was
identified as an area where although
computer courses where available,
many people were not getting the
best out of it due to the ratio of
1 lecturer to 20 students. Seric
identified the opportunity to
mobilise our volunteer network to
provide one on one learning to
supplement the computer courses.
SOLUTION
With the support of Glasgow Housing
Association and Glasgow Kelvin
College a program of events were
planned and delivered at the
Townhead Community Centre to
increase digital participation and
digital skills in the area. At this new
community centre, Glasgow Kelvin
College has a suite of computers
available to the public and provided
courses, however it was identified
that many people need extra one on
one tuition that they were not
receiving in a classroom environment
and there was also a large
percentage of the community that
were not engaging with the program.
GETTING INVOLVED
Seric organised 6 days of one on one,
one hour sessions to provide basic
digital training to those that booked a
slot and the community centre
advertise the scheme to the local
community. Training was based on
each personal request and included
- Signing up to use the computers at
the centre
- Attaching personal devices to the WiFi
- applying for jobs online (upload CVs)
- Taking a picture on a phone and
emailing it
- Using Google maps to plan a holiday
In addition to these one on one
sessions a technical drop in clinic
was available where tasks like virus
removal were undertaken on
personal computers.
Using our extensive network of
contacts, we were able to provide
volunteers from
- Seric Systems
- IBM
- British Computer Society
- Glasgow Caledonia University Students
- GlasgowCaledoniaUniversityLecturers
- Glasgow Kelvin College
Volunteers did not need in depth
computing skills, simply to be able to
use a computer themselves and had
Serics own technical consultants
available to help out with anything
outside their comfort zone.
OUTCOME
The feedback from those requesting
a one-to-one sessions was very
positive, with many coming back for a
second session and we are planning
on replicating similar sessions
throughout the country.
Volunteers were rewarded with
glowing references on LinkedIn or by
email and we are in discussions with
SQA about providing a nationally
recognised award for a Digital
Inclusion volunteer.
An online collaboration space has
been provided to the volunteers to
keep them informed on future
events and to foster best practise,
and innovation.
