Different solid waste management methods
1. Solid waste management
Complete process of collecting, treating and disposing of solid wastes .It include reduce ,reuse and recycle
the maximum wastes materials . There are different methods for solid waste management.
1) Solid waste collection
Solid waste are collected for transportation to final disposal .Collection
system should be systematic and there is no over load of storage systems
and is done by periodically .
2. 2) Sorting
3) Sanitary landfill
Most popular way of waste disposal that trash collected by the municipal workers is transported to huge
areas of land that are dumped.
There are different methods of sanitary landfill;
1) Solid Waste Open Burning
2) Sea dumping process
3) Disposal by hog feeding
4) Disposal by Ploughing into the fields
Differentiating similar type of waste depends on their
hazardous , physical and chemical nature .
3. a) Solid Waste Open Burning
Solid waste are collected and burned at a high temperature
within a wide area of landfill . It causes high level of pollution
.Solid waste open burning is not the perfect method in the
present scenario.
b) Sea Dumping Process
Storage of wastes or other matter in the seabed and the subsoil
thereof from vessels, aircraft, platforms, or other man-made
structures at sea.
This sea dumping process can be carried out only in coastal
cities. This is very costly procedure and not environment
friendly.
4. d) Disposal by Ploughing into the fields
Disposal by ploughing into fields. It is not commonly used in India.
These disposals are not environment friendly in general.
c) Disposal by hog feeding
This method is a method of solid waste disposal whereby
garbage’s/agriculture waste are used to feed animals such as
goat, pig, cattle, dogs, etc.
Disposal by hog feeding is not general procedure in India.
5. 5) Incineration
Incineration is the process of burning hazardous materials at temperatures
high enough to destroy contaminants. Incineration is conducted in an
“incinerator,” which is a type of furnace designed for burning hazardous
materials in a combustion chamber.
This method would be suited in crowded cities where sites for land filling
are not available.
4) Composting process
Another method of treating municipal solid waste is composting, a
biological process in which the organic portion of refuse is allowed to
decompose under carefully controlled conditions.
Two methods have been used in this process:
a) Open Window Composting
b) Mechanical Composting
6. 6) Salvaging procedure
Materials such as metal, paper, glass, rags, certain types of plastic
and so on can be salvaged, recycled, and reused.
7) Fermentation/biological digestion
Biodegradable wastes are converted to compost and recycling
can be done whenever possible. Hazardous wastes can be
disposed using suitable methods.
8) Pyrolysis
It a process of temperature( upto 430 degree celsious )
decomposition of organic material in the absence of oxygen, that
brings many industrial benefits.
