PRESENTED BY:
RAVI PAWAR
( DEPUTY COMMISSIONER-SWM)
2. - Municipal solid waste (MSW): Everyday’s household waste.
TYPES OF WASTE
A)Biodegradable waste: Organic waste that can decompose.
B)Non-biodegradable waste: Materials that do not break down
easily.
- Industrial waste: Generated by factories and industries.
- Construction and demolition waste: From construction sites.
- Hazardous waste: Potentially harmful materials.
- Electronic waste (e-waste): Discarded electronic devices.
INTRODUCTION: SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
3. Introduction
It inlcudes 3 steps :-
1) Collection of waste.
2) Transportation of waste.
3) Processing of waste.
How Solid Waste Management is done ?
4. 1) Collection of waste
Onsite Source Segregation of Waste at each household by placing
seperate bins.
2) Transportation of waste
Seperate Vehicle is arranged to carry segregated wet and dry waste
Also seperate bins are provided to vehicle for collection of demestic
hazardous and sanitary waste.
3) Processing of waste
Dry Waste:- This waste is send to dumping ground .
Wet Waste:- This waste is send to our Biogas plant.
Sanitary Waste:- This waste get incinerated in the incinarator.
DHW:- This waste is handover to third party for its disposal in scientific
way.
5. Processing of DRY waste
1) Dry Waste Processing: The sorted dry waste is processed using various
methods, such as shredding, crushing, or melting, depending on the material.
Recycling: Processed dry waste is sent to recycling facilities where it can be
transformed into new products or materials.
Disposal: If certain dry waste materials cannot be recycled, they may be
disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner, such as through
incineration or landfill.by using following procedure.
1-MRF (material recovery facility center)
2-Waste to energy plant
3-RDF ( REFUSED DERIVED FUEL
6. Processing of WET waste
Composting: This is the natural decomposition of organic materials by microorganisms
into a rich soil amendment known as compost. It can be done in various ways, including
traditional pile composting, where organic matter is piled up and left to decompose over
time, or in enclosed containers like bins or tumblers.
1.
Anaerobic Digestion: This is a biological process that breaks down organic matter in the
absence of oxygen. It produces biogas, which is mainly composed of methane and carbon
dioxide. This biogas can be used as a renewable energy source for heating, electricity
generation, or vehicle fuel, while the remaining material can be used as a nutrient-rich
fertilizer.
1.
Pit Composting: This involves digging a pit in the ground to layer organic waste materials,
such as kitchen scraps, yard waste, and manure. Over time, these materials decompose
and turn into compost.
2.
7. Processing of waste
3) Drum Composting: In this method, organic waste is placed in a drum or barrel that can
be rotated to aerate the composting materials. This helps speed up the decomposition
process by ensuring proper airflow and mixing of the materials.
4) Biogas: Biogas is produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic materials such as
food scraps, manure, and wastewater. It can be used as a renewable energy source for
cooking, heating, or electricity generation.
5) Vermicomposting: This is a composting method that uses worms to decompose organic
waste. Red worms, such as Eisenia fetida, are commonly used for vermicomposting. The
worms consume organic material and produce nutrient-rich castings (worm poop) that
make an excellent soil amendment.
8. Waste Disposal Methods:
1) Landfilling: Burying waste in designated areas. This is the most
common method of waste disposal.
2) Incineration: Burning waste to generate energy. While this method
reduces the volume of waste and can produce electricity, it also
releases pollutants into the air and contributes to climate change.
3) Recycling: Processing waste materials to create new products.
Recycling helps conserve resources, reduce the need for raw
materials, and decrease energy consumption.
9. Processing of waste
3R PRINCIPAL
1) Reduce:
- Minimize the amount of waste generated by using fewer resources and consuming less.
- Opt for reusable items instead of single-use products.
- Practice mindful shopping and avoid unnecessary packaging.
2)Reuse:
- Give items a second life by finding new uses for them.
- Donate to RRR CENTERS or sell unwanted items instead of throwing them away.
- Use refillable containers for drinks and toiletries.
3) Recycle:
- Separate recyclable materials from general waste.
- Follow local recycling guidelines to ensure proper sorting.
- Support recycling initiatives and buy products made from recycled materials.
11. Plastic Ban
14. A) Impact on the Environment:
- Pollution: Improper waste disposal can result in land, air, and
water pollution. This pollution can harm human health, wildlife, and
ecosystems.
- Habitat Destruction: Waste can have a significant impact on
natural habitats. It can destroy ecosystems, disrupt wildlife
populations, and lead to the loss of biodiversity.
- Climate Change: Greenhouse gas emissions from waste
decomposition contribute to climate change. Methane, a potent
greenhouse gas, is released from landfills and incineration facilities.
