This document outlines the goals and process for open calls under the DIATOMIC project to fund application experiments. It provides details on the budget, timeline, evaluation criteria and process. The open calls aim to select consortia to conduct ambitious application experiments generating products and business models using advanced manufacturing and smart service integration technologies. The evaluation involves an eligibility check, remote evaluation by external evaluators, interviews of shortlisted proposals, final selection and project negotiations. Funded experiments will proceed through design, development and market phases with payments upon delivery of defined deliverables. The project also provides various value added services to supported entities.

Open Calls goals:
① To attract and select the best of the best (small) consortia, consisting of tech adopters,
tech providers and Competence Centers (CC) from across the continent!
② Support, through tech/biz mentoring, tools and funding ambitious Application
Experiments generating AME/SSI-based products, processes and business models with
strong market potential.
 Non-tech and tech SMEs increase competitiveness and new ideas,
 CCs strengthen and their customer base,
 The economy and society benefit from newly achieved efficiencies of smart applications.

• Budget per call: € 3.000.000,00
• Budget per sector:Health 30% > Agrifood 30% > Manufacturing 30% > Others 10%
• Number of application experiments funded: 15 to 43
• Number of entities supported: 30 to 140
• Applicants consortia: from 1-3 entities (lead by SMEs; public funding max:40% budget)
• Maximum: €100k €200k/ consortia

① Eligibility check: eligible criteria: (i) consortium members are eligible under H2020 rules; (ii) proposals are
lead by industrial partner; (iii) non-industrial partner has <40% total budget; (iv) experiment is under the
technology domain AME/SSI; (v) experiments demonstrate European dimension (“through cross border
experimentation or expanding the impact of local experiments to European scale”).
② Remote Evaluation: each proposal will be reviewed by 2 external evaluators. Evaluators will have to rate
each proposal under the following evaluation criteria (from 1-5 scale and with minimum thresholds):
• Experiment [1-5; min.3]: design, reliability, feasibility, novelty of the experiment concept
• Technology [1-5; min.3]: innovation, integration with DIATOMIC expertise, technical capacity to achieve TRL 6-9 (to cross
the valley of death), technical milestones
• Consortium [1-5; min.3]: capacity to perform; knowledge, technological and business expertise; commitment
• Impact [1-5; min.4]: experiment output, business scalability, exploitation plan, commercial milestones
IMPORTANT: additional point will be given to proposals that bring private fund into the total experiment budget, reducing the
funding rate of DIATOMIC: between 15%-24%: +1 point; between 25%-30%: +2 points; and above 31%: +3 points

③ Short listed proposals: The top ranked proposals (2x number of proposals to be selected) will be invited to online-interviews.
④ Online-interviews: aims to go into details in to experiment concept; team skills, and engagement; and capacity and willingness
to exploit experiment results. Interviews with 2 evaluators + 1 DIATOMIC member as moderator. Evaluated criteria:
• Concept & Technology (40%) [1-5; min.3] - confirmation of proposed targets and technology fit;
• Business (30%) [1-5; min.3] - the viability of the proposed business model;
• Exploitation (30%) [1-5; min.3] - reliability to reach milestones and readiness to present to investors & corporates
After the meeting, evaluators form a consensus regarding the evaluation and a report is prepared.
⑤ Final selection: all proposals will be ranked based on their scores. Publication of accepted proposals at stage-1 and stage-2
(also non-eligible proposals. All applicants will be informed about the evaluation results.
⑥ Project Negotiations and execution: negotiations will go via a financial checking and technical negotiations based on
evaluator`s comments. The negotiations should finish in 2 weeks. In case of failure, one additional week may be granted, if still
not successfully, the proposal is rejected and the next one in ranking is selected. After successful negotiations, a contract will
be signed between the DIATOMIC coordinator and the legal representative of the company.

Phase.1 - Design (1-2 months): within this stage experiments are to be planned and
detailed. First deliverable: Application Experiment plan. [Positive assessment > 40%
payment]
Phase.2 - Develop (6-9 months): within this stage, the sub-projects perform their technical
developments. Second deliverable: demonstration of the experiment development results.
[Positive assessment > 30% payment]
Phase.3 - Market (2-3 months): within this stage experiments are to focus on exploitation
of results/ achievements. Third deliverable: is a report on market associated activities.
