What I ’ m going to show you is part of a larger website for ESL teachers and students - http://www.simpleenglishvideos.com, created and featuring Vicki Hollett, a name that some of you may be familiar with, as she wrote business books Ín at the Deep End´ and ´Business Opportunities ’ . I ’ m going to focus on a section called ‘ One Minute English Lessons ’ .
She explains and illustrates these aspects of language in 60 (actually sometimes 90) seconds. I ’ m going to suggest omse ways we can use these in our teaching.
She explains and illustrates these aspects of language in 60 (actually sometimes 90) seconds. I ’ m going to suggest omse ways we can use these in our teaching.
We can use these videoas ‘ straight ’ , for example students watch the video, then tell each other what the differences are between the two words are, as with this example of ‘ sympathetic ’ and ‘ nice ’ .
You could get your students to think more about the language point before they watch the video by extracting some of the marker sentences and providing them with a pre-viewing task.
Here are some some of the illustrative sentences used to explain ‘ by and until ’ . Copy and paste them from the transcript under the video and make sure students understand the difference situations, then ask them to find the words ‘ by ’ and ‘ until ’ and in pairs / small groups, see if they can decide what the difference is between the two words.
When students have discussed the questions, you can then play the video for them to compare their answers, listening out for the rule given by Vicki, in this case: By: at or before a specific time. Until: for situations that continue up to a certain time. You can then get students to rehearse and act out some of the short sequences.
Another way to diagnse your students ’ current understanding and help them to listen actively is to ask them a simple open question about a language point such as this …
You can then play the video for them to see how much information they had in common with Vicki ’ s explanation and illustrations.
Another way to make use of the transcript below the video is to use it as a gap-fill, as in this video showing the difference between ‘ miss and lose ’ .
Students read and fill in the gaps with the correct form of ‘ miss or lose ’ .
They then watch the video and compare to their answers.
Of course, you could give your students the task to watch a specific video or videos for homework and report back to the rest of the class next lesson. There are other language points which could perhaps benefit from Vicki ’ s treatment, such as
Finally, you can also get your students to make their own versions of One Minute Videos. Here ’ s one way of getting them to develop a video
