My approach with this
population
Getting to the
point where
students are
open to being
challenged can
be difficult
Meet them where they
are
Most students can only think of food: so I use
that as a hook as much as possible
Other "hooks": music, art, sports
(Anything that could be considered distracting)
Successful Lessons

Why dough?
Ag science lesson: I have students who were
recently placed on gluten-free diets.
Student was being teased
Learned about gluten to reduce stigma
Enjoyed yummy food
Activity
I had a couple of recipe cards available with all
ingredients to make: pancakes and pizza dough
Which flour to
choose?
The Goal
What we set out to

• Remove stigma, reduce bullying

• Learn to cook
• Learn purposes of different flours
and how to substitute ingredients
• Science
• Practice making claims
• Find Evidence to support claims
• Test Claims

• What gluten is

I forgot to take pictures, but we did enjoy a lot of
food and students are now open to eating
