Diana Ernestine Earle Ross was born on the 26th of March 1944 in Detroit,
Michigan in the USA. She is the second eldest of Ernestine Moten who was a
schoolteacher, and Fred Ross, a former United States Army soldier. Diana and her
family moved from Belmont Rd in the north end of Detroit, to St. Antoine Street
when she was 14. Untill her teenage years, Diana was a regular tomboy, but she also
had dreams of being a fashion designer. So at high school she studied design and all
the things needed to be a designer. Diana graduated in January 1962 from Cass
Technical High School. One year earlier than she should. Around this time, Diana
was getting interested in rock and roll artists.

When Diana was 15, she joined the Primmetes, which
was a singing group, called the sister group of the boy
singing group, the Primes. The group included Mary
Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown and
herself. In 1960, the Primmetes made their first
recordings for Lu Pine Records, with Diana singing
the leads on her and Florence’s copositon “ Tears of
Sorrow”. During the group’s early years, Diana served
as the group’s hair stylist, make-up artist and costume
designer.

In January 1961, Barbra Martin replaced Betty McGlown. In the same year, the
group had to change their name to claim their manager, Berry Gordy. So Florence
Ballard chose the name, the Supremes. After a period of stress, the Supreme’s
manager removed Florence Ballard from the group and replaced her with Cindy
Birdsong. Then Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes, hinting
that he would in the future make Diana a solo singing star.
