2. The Beginning:
• In 1989, Nigel Martin-Smith decided he wanted to put together a
British male vocal group based in Manchester, he also wanted it to
be teen-orientated to appeal to different demographic segments of
the industry.
• He was introduced to Gary Barlow who impressed him with his self-
written material and Martin-Smith decided to create a group
around him.
• In 1990 auditions took place to find other members of the band and
they found; Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Robbie
Williams.
• The band initially went by the name ‘Kick It’
• Their breakthrough single was a cover of the 1975 Tavares hit ‘It
Only Takes a Minute’, which reached number 7 in the UK singles
charts.
• Their first album, ‘Take That and Party’, was released in 1992 and
included all of their hit singles they had already come out with.
3. Image
• They started off with a
very youthful and playful,
typical boy band image;
wearing matching clothing
to begin with and as time
went on they all began to
establish each their own
individual image.
• In their first performance
the band was dressed in
all leather and played at
‘The Hit Man and Her’.

• They appealed to all types
of audiences from females
to a gay male market.
4. • In 1993 the group released another album called ‘Everything Changes’ with all
the music based on Gary Barlow’s own material. It made it to number one in
the UK.
• In 1995 the group had their first world tour and they had many magazine
covers and came out with their own merchandise.
• They performed at many different music awards and had generated a large
female fan base; who knew them for their breakdance routines, high energy
and creative tour productions.
• In 1995 ‘Nobody Else’ was released, again based on Barlow’s original material,
it reached number 1 in the UK and in Europe.
• ‘Back for Good’, one of their singles, reached number one in 31 countries,
including the US.
5. The Breakup
• Robbie Williams nearly overdosed on drugs before a performance
in 1994, and in 1995 he was given the option of either to go by the
band’s responsibilities or leave before their world tour.
• After he left he band continued, completing their world tour in
1995.
• On the 13th
of February 1996, it was announced that the whole band
would break up, they followed it up by releasing a ‘Greatest Hits’.
• As they had created such a large female fan base, teenage girls
around the globe threatened suicide and it went to the extent that
telephone hotlines were set up to council them.
6. Reunion
• In 2006 the band came back together without
Robbie Williams and came out with a
comeback Album called ‘Beautiful World’
which became number 1 and has sold over 2.8
million copies.
Because the members had all grown
up their new album was not based
around the ‘teenage boy’ image
anymore and was a lot more
sophisticated cover, appealing to all
sorts of audiences.
7. 2006 Image
• Instead of going for the
young teenage boy
image that they had
when they first started
as a band, they now
wore suits and much
more grown up clothing.
• Their new image lost a
lot of the youthful, sex
appeal that they may
have previously had and
no longer appealed to
pre-teen audiences with
their new image.
• However, the people
who loved them for over
a decade will still be
pleased with their new
image.
8. Robbie Williams
• After working with Barlow for a while Williams decided that
he wanted to rejoin the group and announced he would in
2010.
• Together they released an album called ‘Progress’ which was
the fasted selling album of the century, with 235,000 copies
being sold in the first day. They also then went on tour, and
in May 2013 announced they would be making their 7th
album,
however Williams decided, after the birth of his second child
that he no longer wanted to be part of the band and so in
April 2014 left again.
• Orange also decided he wanted to leave and in September
2014.
9. Solo Career
• Since deciding to fully leave the band in 2014
Williams came out with the album, ‘Under the
Radar Volume 1’
Despite being 40-41 years of age
when releasing the album, he still
maintains the playful image that he
had previously had when working
with ‘Take That’, he also continued
to make music that followed the pop
genre when perusing his solo career.
10. III
• The band still decided to release the album in October 2014,
titling it ‘III’.
They came out with an even more
grown up image but kept their
songs fun with the intention of it
being a ‘homage to the early years’
11. III Image
• Many critics who had been
fans of the band since the
beginning said that the
band was missing
something without having
Williams and Orange in it.
• Williams brought to the
band their playfulness and
without him, many say
there isn’t much that
separates them from other
boy bands that are out
there.
• They still maintained their
mature image, however
the still had some of their
playfulness from the very
beginning.
