Type 1 diabetes targets children and teens and is caused by genetic, environmental, and autoimmune factors. Type 2 diabetes targets adults, the elderly, and certain ethnic groups and is caused by genetic factors as well as obesity, physical inactivity, and high or low birth weight. Both types of diabetes involve genetic and environmental risk factors.
