The document outlines the phases of the Dream Society of Excellence (DSOE) internet project synchronization plan. Phase 1 involves a question and answer portion and active referrals. Phase 2 includes diagnostic exams for new members on mathematics from kindergarten to algebra and practice exercises. Phase 3 will begin uploading textbook answers. Phase 4 will upload DSOE course reviews including civil service, nursing licensure, and engineering reviews. The document also provides an incentive structure for referrals, with higher incentives provided for referrals in later generations.
Lean software engineering emphasizes continuous delivery of high quality applications. Ken Pugh explains the principles and practices that form the basis of lean software development―concentrating on developing a continuous flow by eliminating delays and loopbacks; delivering quickly by developing in small batches; emphasizing high quality which decreases delays due to defect repair; making policies, process and progress transparent; optimizing the whole rather than individual steps; and becoming more efficient by decreasing waste. Ken describes lean’s emphasis on cycle time, rather than resource utilization, and demonstrates the value stream map which helps you visualize the development cycle flow to identify bottlenecks. He explores the differences between push and pull flow, describes how lean thinking shows up in agile processes including Scrum and Extreme Programming, and discusses how lean can be applied to the entire workflow—not just the development portion. Ken concludes with a discussion of how you can begin your lean transformation.
The document discusses shifting from traditional constraint-based measures of success like cost, schedule, and performance to more value-based measures through impact mapping. It provides an example of impact mapping for a goal of decreasing decision response time by 16 hours. Impact mapping identifies who benefits, how they benefit through specific features or behaviors, and measurements of how much each contributes to the goal. This allows focusing on business value and clear assumptions rather than just velocity.
This document discusses the value of DevOps and monitoring tools in improving collaboration between development and operations teams and justifying investments in automation. It notes that traditionally, dev teams focused on features while ops focused on incidents, but both were measured by vague business metrics like revenue and uptime. New tools can help baseline current problems, measure progress over time, and demonstrate business impact to obtain support for further investments. The document advocates for monitoring the full customer experience rather than individual system components.
A while back a client asked me to help him persuade a development team to pay for my coaching out of their budget, and to show them why it might be worth doing. It turned out that they trusted me enough that I didn't need to persuade them (and I didn't cost them £100k either!) but the challenge stuck with me, and this is the presentation I made as a result. It also serves as a note of the kind of financial benefit you can get from doing Agile well.
The usual performance metric that most Paid Search professionals would do bid optimisation against is CPA or ROAS. I explore other different metrics that could be used that would still really help drive a better performance than one would usually see. It looks at ways not just to drive revenue growth but also improve cost efficiency.

Have you ever wondered whether your retrospective format was actually effective at fueling learning and improvement? Are you ready to try something different?
"FOCOL Point" is Idea Flow Learning Framework's 5-step learning and improvement protocol. It works great for software improvement, but it also works for team reflection, personal reflection, or mentorship. Rather than searching for answers, a FOCOL Point is all about finding the right questions.
Once I walk through the protocol as a group, we'll make a FOCOL Point together!
First, we'll identify the biggest software problems faced by the audience using the "flashstorming" technique. Then we'll focus on the top problems of the group and start digging into the details by walking through a group-adapted version of the stop and think protocol:
1. **Focus**: What's the journey we're trying to understand?
2. **Observe**: What patterns do we see? (for all journey pattern types)
3. **Conclude**: What obstacles seem to be causing the pain?
4. **Optimize**: How could we have avoided the obstacles?
5. **Learn**: What questions should we ask ourselves in the future?
Amplify your learning by reflecting more productively on your own or with your team! You can immediately apply this technique on your own projects.

The document provides an agenda and summary of a presentation by Team 5 on their project with Fiat Chrysler's Kokomo Transmission Plant to optimize the schedule for maintenance of 231 NTC machines and 138 material handling machines. The team approached the project by defining the problem scope, improving the usability of maintenance files, evaluating downtime and labor efficiency, and building a new concurrent schedule. Their recommendations include implementing the new schedule with current labor levels or a new labor policy to realize estimated annual savings of $8.6 million to $11.57 million from reduced downtime and labor.
CloudSports is an online system that allows users to reserve tennis courts and soccer fields. It provides owners of these facilities with information about reservations and field usage. For users, the system allows logging in via Facebook, reserving fields using a GPS map, and paying with a credit card. Owners can register their facilities and see data on reservations and users. Testing found users would use such a system and pay around $1 for reservations. However, engaging with owners was challenging as many were not interested or the owners could not be reached. More research is needed to understand the owner client segment better to build an effective product.

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on BlockchainClaudio Di Ciccio
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away
