The development of the osteoarticular system in children is a complex process that begins in the second month of intrauterine life. It occurs in two phases, with the first phase of rapid bone growth between ages 6-7 years and the second phase of bone shaping and structure formation between ages 13-16 years. Joint development occurs later than bone development, with articular bone growth peaking between ages 2-3 years and other joint constituents forming between ages 6-10 years. The osteoarticular system remains prone to trauma and infections throughout childhood, and can have long-lasting effects like deformity or serve as sites for pathogens to occupy.
