Detours has an incredible website, product line and market reach. Here are just a few brainstorm ideas I came up with to benefit the marketing efforts.
2. detours website let’s add some more networks!
nice use of bike lingo!
3. bi-monthly featured artist (because b-i spells b-i-k-e)
of course herman yu is a designated designer at detours, but what about bringing in a local artist every other month to
feature one of his or her designs on a bag that detours sells? it’s a way to stretch the product line and introduce new, local
artists to the bike scene. and it keeps it fresh and fun.
4. product detail pages
i like this. keeping the
signage nice,
creative & consistent.
move these other product
“shots” up underneath featured
photo for easier access to show
off all other product features.
i like how the detours logo is
part of the repel emblem.
6. in the news
write press releases for and/or place ads in
seattle newspapers/news websites. at least stay
up with the current local events and news and see
where detours can ride on in.
8. take it to the world
go global! detours ships to canada, why not the world?
uk bike magazines
9. stay in the know with these outlets
great pr for detours. linked right on website. good job!
she checked out
encompass life took detours latest
several sexy products at last
product shots of fall’s interbike*
the sodo handlebar
bag and wrote a *see events for more info
fun, descriptive
feature story on it.
let’s stay on top of
encompass life’s
mind for another
positive pr op.
bike commuters, also
made a great review
with awesome pictures
of the product in use.
this could be a place to
place detours’ banner
ads. just a thought.
11. radio spots
because let’s be honest, not everyone commutes to work on bike. for those
after work bikers stuck in their car in traffic, let’s remind or make them
aware of detours with a short and sweet radio spot.
local radio stations
pandora
spotify
12. get on the map... the 2012 bike map
have link to 2012 bike map on detours website
13.
14. let’s get on this for 2013!
potential partnership ops with this listing
contact:
walkandbike@seattle.gov to add Detours
16. groupon and/or living social
have a groupon and/or living social deal for one of the detours
products to get detours name out to the coupon seekers.
perhaps you have potential customers who would love to shop at
detours, but the price isn’t in their budget. with a ‘coupon/deal’, it
will be!
17. flickr
show pictures from outreach events,
customers using detours’ products,
employees on their bikes.
looks like bike wheels.
play w/ the graphics on detours website to look like a bike for clicking to flickr link
18. spoke(n)
it’s great that people can subscribe to the blog.
seems to be a good consistent up-keep with the blog writers.
maybe have a pseudo-schedule
so blog subscribers can expect to have
an entry every other day-ish.
19. facebook
perhaps each week
or bi-weekly
feature another
product as the
cover picture.
add store hours for all the bikers out there,
we can bring in more fans!
20. facebook testimonials
testimonials are the best form of advertising out there!
let the customer do the work. talk the talk.
looks like detours’ facebook page has it going
on. people are posting really amazing
comments about their purchased detour bags.
golden! when a fan posts a pic of product in use. are they getting paid for this? just kidding!
21. sharing on facebook
share fun bike facts, stories and videos on detours fb wall to entertain
great strategy to bring in more fans!
22. tweak descriptions
facebook
use same description on facebook and twitter
to maintain consistent voice.
twitter
23. twitter
this is great, but let’s get
more followers!
link with spoke(n) when there’s a new entry and facebook for events
24. linkedin
it’s a good idea for every small and large organization/business to be on
linkedin to legitimize it. to show the company is real. it is out there. it’s a
chance to show off it’s employees as well. and when there’s a job
opportunity, detours can post it here. job seekers will be all over applying for
such a cool company. it’ll give detours more potential employees to chose
from. the more options, the better, eh?
25. pinterest
let’s start some boards and get pinning!
board ideas: favorite places to bike, places i want to bike, bikes i
want, bike get-up to get, got to have bags
outdoors nw pinned a detours bag.
and they mention something of detours pinned on FB.
26. tumblr
another way to show portfolio of detours bike bags
this is my friend’s illustration portfolio to
show how simple it is to display one’s work.
a thought for detours to do this with it’s
product line.
27. youtube
seeing is believing!
let’s show detours customers‘how-to set up the get-up.’
produce viral how-to videos to show how-to set up the different
detours bags on bikes.
link how-to videos to product page on detours website.
video testimonials from happy customers would be great! link to
product page on detours website.
28. slideshare
just like the youtube channel let’s show detours customers‘how-to
set up the get-up’ via PowerPoint presentations on slideshare.
produce Powerpoints with step by step on how-to set up the different detours bags on bikes.
link how-to PowerPoints to product page on detours website.
29. spotify
have a spotify “station” link to detours website.
with songs that are good for biking, for instance:
1. Bicycle Race - Queen
2. Apology Song - The Decemberists
3. Tour De France - Kraftwerk
4. Bike - Pink Floyd
5. Bicycle Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle - Be Your Own Pet
6. Bicycle Built For Two - John Fahey
7. Bicycle Spaniard - Cracker
8. Midnight Bicycle Mystery - Deerhoof
9. Bike Ride To The Moon - The Dukes of Stratosphear
10. Cycling Is Fun - Shonen Knife
30. google +
another good outlet to be on these days.
let’s make some hangouts to get people talking about bikes and bags!
32. cascade bicycle club
http://www.cascade.org
looks like detours already has a link to their
website. let’s work with them on some
philanthropic outreach!
for this event list
for their education & outreach
33. bicycle alliance of washington
http://www.bicyclealliance.org/
outreach ops
keep an eye on these
another partnership op
perhaps a place to advertise
34. capital bicycling club of olympia
http://capitalbicycleclub.org/
there are so many small bike organizations in WA. let’s get on their radar!
35. recycled cycles
http://www.recycledcycles.com/
also up with the events
could put up/leave
detours marketing
materials at rc if possible.
36. seattle bike supply
http://www.seattlebikesupply.com/
see if they’ll sell detours gear
on wholesale consignment
39. just around the corner
detours is a sponsor, but will you be there as a
vendor/exhibitor?
logo is a bit different than the one on the website.
is this an out-dated one?
or the one used when it’s on a white-background?
probably a good idea to use the same colors, and
font of the website logo to keep things consistent.
40. cadence for a cause
just a name i thought up for some cause marketing.
detours chooses a cause for raising money.
choose different cause every year.
raise $ by miles rode.
42. bike events coming up
let’s keep an eye out on these
to see which ones we can
get involved with.
43. seattle summer streets
http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/summerstreets.htm
be a vendor here, have a booth
demonstrate detours' products
see how easy it is to set up the bike bags
let the consumer ‘sample’ the bags on their own bike
have link to seattle summer streets on detours website
44. walk ride bike challenge
have link to walk bike ride challenge on detours website.
45. bicycle sundays
perhaps detours can be a sponsor too!
have link to bicycle sundays on detours website.
46. good link. was detours there
as a vendor and/or sponsor?
great to be out there in other
parts of the nation strutting
detours bags!
no detours logo,
so maybe next year?
47. maybe detours can help sponsor
something like this or a ‘carb-up’
dinner the night before.
48. detours delivers
(this is one of those random routes i spoke of on page 1)
if detours had a bi-weekly flyer/newsletter/ or what have you, it could be:
delivered door-to-door by a newsies-type girl/boy on bike wearing:
detours branded newsies cap
detours branded messenger bag
taken to local bike partners, organizations and businesses
...bringin’ it back to the bike
