According to recent industry reports, email marketing is the
largest driver of online donations across every nonprofit
sector. An effective email marketing campaign can raise
over 30% of an organization's annual online revenue! The
first step to achieving these results is having a highly-
engaged and opted in email list.
Email acquisition efforts should grow your email list to
include highly interested subscribers who are likely to
become donors or advocates of your organization.
 Once acquired through a petition, ad campaign or other
acquisition method, these subscribers should then be
introduced to the organization through a welcome series.
The series should welcome them to the community,
encourage them to get engaged online through social media,
read your blog posts or download white papers, and
eventually ask for a donation.
Depending on what actions these new subscribers take, you
can then move them into a different communication thread.
If they make a donation, add them to your donor mailing
list and solicit them to become a larger donor or monthly
donor. If they don't take action, add them to your non-donor
mailing list and cultivate them throughout the year with
quizzes and events.
 Finally, after acquiring these new subscribers
and engaging with them through the welcome
series, be sure to properly tag them on your
database. Keeping track of all actions these
subscribers take, including which channel they
first engaged with and their donation history,
will help target future communications directly
to them. The more you know about your
subscribers, the more targeted the messaging
can be, the more likely they are to convert to a
donor.

Designing an Effective Welcome Email Series

  • 2.  Faircom New York is an international fundraising and marketing agency working with nonprofits across the United States and around the world. Applying a multifaceted approach to digital marketing, one of the main services Faircom New York offers is integrated email marketing. According to recent industry reports, email marketing is the largest driver of online donations across every nonprofit sector. An effective email marketing campaign can raise over 30% of an organization's annual online revenue! The first step to achieving these results is having a highly- engaged and opted in email list. Email acquisition efforts should grow your email list to include highly interested subscribers who are likely to become donors or advocates of your organization.
  • 3.  Once acquired through a petition, ad campaign or other acquisition method, these subscribers should then be introduced to the organization through a welcome series. The series should welcome them to the community, encourage them to get engaged online through social media, read your blog posts or download white papers, and eventually ask for a donation. Depending on what actions these new subscribers take, you can then move them into a different communication thread. If they make a donation, add them to your donor mailing list and solicit them to become a larger donor or monthly donor. If they don't take action, add them to your non-donor mailing list and cultivate them throughout the year with quizzes and events.
  • 4.  Finally, after acquiring these new subscribers and engaging with them through the welcome series, be sure to properly tag them on your database. Keeping track of all actions these subscribers take, including which channel they first engaged with and their donation history, will help target future communications directly to them. The more you know about your subscribers, the more targeted the messaging can be, the more likely they are to convert to a donor.
