Design Objective
Posters are judged on their presentation as well as their content. They are supposed to be concise
communication tools. They should attract attention and provoke curiosity. Posters should be
graphically appealing and data should be represented clearly so that the audience can understand
it in the first glance.
A poster consists of a title and supporting text and images. All the contents should be placed
such that they integrate together as a whole. The design should be simple.
Goal
An A-4 size poster highlighting the achievements of a famous journalist from history was to be
designed using Adobe Photoshop to develop a basic understanding to the software.
The journalist chosen was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The newspapers that he edited during
his lifetime were portrayed as his achievements.

Criteria
Principles of Design
The images and text used in the poster were placed such that they appeared to be parts of a
unified whole. The proximity or closeness of the images and text lets the audience associate
them with each other. The eyes of the viewer start to view the poster from the left and thus,
the Gandhi’s sketch has been placed on the left using rule of thirds, so that he looks at the
whole poster.
Color scheme
To follow the theme of retro, shades of mustard and chocolate brown were chosen. Mustard
was set as background color while chocolate brown was used for the text and sketch of
Gandhi.
Typography
Keeping in mind the legibility of typography, the following settings were done:
Main Text “Designed by”
Font Name Snappy Service NF Century Gothic
Font size 30 pt. 12pt.
Font weight Regular Regular
Alignment Center Right
Other Effects Leading- 36 pt. All Caps, Drop Shadow
Working with Photoshop Tools
Layers- Six Layers were used in the project- one background layer, two image layers (sketch
of Gandhi, newspaper clipping), two text layers and a rectangle shape layer (for placing
“Designed by”).
Guides- Used for the placement of different layers.
Tools used- Move Tool, Horizontal Text Tool, Rectangle Tool, Eyedropper Tool, Paint
Bucket Tool and Magic Wand Tool. Magic Wand Tool was used for editing Gandhi’s sketch.
Opacity was reduced for the newspaper clipping to 15% and for the chocolate brown color in
the rectangle to 80%.
Drop Shadow was used for the “Designed by” text.

Limitations
No title was given to the poster as the image of Gandhi speaks for itself. A poster with no
title might not catch much attention of the viewer.
The poster was made in RGB color mode and later, converted to CMYK color mode before
printing. Hence, there was a loss in color quality.

student is now familiar with layers, guides, texts, images, shapes, background, typography,
colors and basic tools of the software.
