Banks must classify non-performing assets (NPAs) as substandard, doubtful, or loss depending on how long the asset has been non-performing. Deposit insurance was first introduced in the United States during the Great Depression to restore confidence in banks and protect bank account holders. Over 100 countries have since adopted deposit insurance, including India which launched the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation in 1961 to insure bank deposits.
