2. Starting nearly 5,000 years ago, ancient civilizations began to remove food from their teeth by
using chew sticks, a twig with a frayed end. From there, toothbrushes developed crafted from
animal bone or wood. Our modern, manual toothbrushes with nylon-bristles were invented
back in 1938 and have continued to develop with the invention of electric toothbrushes in 1939,
which were introduced to the U.S. in 1960.
 Remember:
 Brush twice a day with your manual or powered toothbrush
 Don’t routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers (closed, moist environments are more
conductive to microorganism growth than in the open air)
 Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head once every three to four months
