3. INTRODUCTION
• A dental implant (also known as an endosseous
implant or fixture); which was invented in 1952 by a
Swedish orthopedic surgeon named Per-Ingvar
Brånemark; is a surgical fixture that is placed into the
jawbone and allowed to fuse with the bone over the
span of a few months. The dental implant acts as a
replacement for the root of a missing tooth and
holds a replacement tooth or a bridge.
• Class III medical device (Rule 2 sub rule 3)
4. TYPES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
ENDOSSEOUS IMPLANTS SUBPERIOSTEAL IMPLANTS
9. MARKET OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
• Used worldwide for following purposes :-
- Prosthodontic purposes
- Orthodontic purposes – TAD(Temporary
Anchorage Devices)
- Facial esthetics
• Brazil – The leading country in Dental Implants
10. CARE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS
Very important for the success of Dental Implants. Two
Ways:-
1) Professional maintenance
In addition to prevention of gum diseases, check
for bite, and x-ray examination, stains that
cannot be removed by daily brushing are
cleaned. It is recommended to receive tooth-
brushing instructions, allowing for proper at-
home dental care.
2) At-home maintenance
Brushing and flossing recommended.
11. COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS
• Costs of dental implant includes :-
a) Examination cost
b) Implant body cost
c) Superstructure or prosthesis cost
• About 3500 USD to 4500 USD , depending upon
region.
• Unfortunately, not included in dental insurance , as
they advocate it to be an elective procedure.
12. RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS
FIRST SIX MONTHS
1)Immediate Post-operative
Risks
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection
- Flap necrosis
- Damage to nearby anatomical
structures
2)Decreased Primary Implant
Stability
3)Failure to integrate – 8 to 24
weeks
LONG TERM
1)Peri-implantitis
2)Gingival Recession
3)Fracture of implant and
abutment
14. CLINICAL TRIALS RELATED TO DENTAL IMPLANTS
• As implants belong to one of the high risk medical device so they
were tested under clinical trials before. For the improvement , to
overcome its risk factors and to evolve newer materials for dental
implants , clinical trials have been continuously being carried out.
• 277 clinical trials.
• Usually takes 9 to 10 years.
• Three broad outcome domains that need to be captured by future
research were identified:
(i) patient reported outcome measures,
(ii) peri-implant tissue health and
(iii) performance of implant supported restorations.
15. BRIEFING OF A CLINICAL TRIAL
• SPONSOR:
Goteborg University
• COLLABORATORS:
The Swedish Research Council
The Swedish Social Insurance Agency
• INFORMATION PROVIDED BY (RESPONSIBLE PARTY):
Göteborg University
• CLINICALTRIALS.GOV IDENTIFIER:
NCT01825772
• FIRST RECEIVED: April 3, 2013
• LAST UPDATED: February 3, 2014
• LAST VERIFIED: February 2014
• PURPOSE
900 subjects (randomly selected from the National Health Insurance data
register in Sweden) having received dental implants 9-10 years ago.
The prevalence, extent and severity of peri-implantitis was determined.
Patient-centered outcomes will also be obtained.
