There were an estimated 298,000 Australians with dementia in 2011. This number is projected to nearly triple to around 900,000 by 2050 due to population ageing. Dementia is a leading cause of death and disability in Australia. People with dementia rely heavily on health and aged care services, with total direct expenditure on dementia estimated at $4.9 billion in 2009-10. Many people with dementia have multiple health conditions and require high levels of care. Around 200,000 informal carers of people with dementia living in the community experience substantial demands in their caring role.
