Delta College - Life Saved with Cardiac Science AED
Hello Mark, 5/9/2012
I was visited this week by the student who survived the cardiac arrest, and is
making a great recovery in large part to this machine which we have on our campus. I
probably would not have contacted your website had it not been such a great recovery
story. The student and his mother walked into my office to thank me and it felt great to
see him standing and talking. The last time I had seen him he was dead on the floor.
I received the call from dispatch that a student had passed out in class. I
grabbed my trauma bag, oxygen bag and my AED. When I arrived on scene the instructor
and a fellow student were beside the patient. They reported that his breaths were shallow
and that he had a pulse. I knelt beside him and asked his name. I gave him a sternum rub
with my knuckles and called out his name I got no response. At this point I could no
longer see the rise and fall of his chest. I checked for a pulse and had not seen one. I
grabbed my scissors at that point and cut open his shirt. I placed the electrodes on his
chest and side and followed the prompts. I immediately started CPR after the shock was
administered. At this point Stockton Fire Dept. walked in behind me and took over
patient care as I handed it off to them. I stayed involved doing compressions and holding
IV bags. We are very lucky to have an ALS engine company at the edge of our campus.
It is good to see that fellow SJDC alumni are out there succeeding. I contacted
your company because I thought it would be nice for you to hear that when deployed
quickly the Cardiac Science AED saved a life. Your diligence and efforts to bring our
AED program up to speed certainly contributed significantly in this exceptional
outcome, and for that I salute you. Well that is my story and I am glad I got to share it
with a fellow alumni. Please feel free to contact me with any follow up questions.
