The Agile Manifesto has been around since 2001 and, although the industry has rapidly developed, the principles still hold very true. However, there are lots of great new ideas that people have been experimenting with since the Manifesto was signed and, in this talk, attendees will hear about a few of these developments, focusing on the concept of Modern Agile.
About Jacob Creech:
Jacob started out in web development around 2000 and discovered that people constantly asked for things they didn't actually need, which led him on a journey of discovery that ended up in this thing called 'Agile'. He found himself in China helping develop virtual products for Second Life and then as the one and only non-Chinese person in a web development agency – good for language practice, not so much for delivering amazing work.
After some time back in New Zealand on a usability product among other things, he returned to China to co-found an Agile consulting company, worked with a variety of large, impressive-sounding international companies at a scale that would make most New Zealand cities look tiny, and managed to stumble into a range of interesting opportunities all around Asia that kept him busy for the next few years.
However, after some time, he got the itch to return to NZ and ended up at Assurity in late 2015 where he now heads up the Agile practice and works with government and non-government clients to deliver work in ever-improving ways. In his spare time, he (poorly) plays table tennis and enjoys naming babies after entrepreneurs.

Many teams suffer from due to conflicting priorities. When today's priority one usurps yesterday's priority one, expensive context switching becomes a problem.
Operations teams are especially hard hit by shifting priorities because of increased variability from supporting ongoing development of new projects while maintaining features & apps in production. Add in unplanned work and security issues and we have a battle between getting new features delivered or keeping production stable. Hence the dilemma DevOps is working to solve.
Dominica will talk about how Dev and Ops teams can use use a Lean flow Kanban approach to limit work-in-progress and allocate capacity for the nature of the demand as a way to address and improve prioritization issues and context switching.

Technical Debt: A Management Problem That Requires a Management Solution
The primary cause of technical debt in your organization is very likely your managers – not your programmers nor your architects. The management desire to be “on time and on budget” often motivates deployment of poor-quality assets and rarely leaves room for investment in long-term quality. Although technical professionals may readily realize this problem managers often do not, or if they do they don’t view technical debt as a priority. It is time for a change.
This presentation explores the root causes of technical debt within organizations, many of which trace back to the management mindset and the strategies that result from it. In this talk you will learn what this actually means and how you can use this to practically deal with your way through your (agile) transition. You will learn why there are no best and no good practices, that you can just copy and everything is fine – and what the nature of an agile transition really is. You will learn about an example of a successful agile transition and what factors made it successful. And you will learn to use a tool I have developed, to find and analyze approaches to see whether they might be promising for you to try out. We use (and evolve) this tool at my company, Ericsson (24,000 people in R&D), since 1 ½ years and have found it very helpful. The talk will introduce and make use of Systems Thinking and Complex Adaptive Systems theory. Many people struggle with applying these concepts practically in their daily working life. You will learn how to bring these great and promising theories “down on earth” and make them practically usable. So, if you are on an agile transformation, no matter whether you are just getting started or whether you have progressed already: this talk will give you new insights and a very solid foundation - based on state-of-the-art leadership- and problem solving approaches – to make your journey more successful.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- Thanks for the introduction. I’m very re-assured by the size and corporate coverage of the audience here today. Recognising the need for agile, or perhaps more importantly being prepared to listen to what is has to offer gives me faith in the future of enterprise software development. I will try and leave sufficient time at the end for questions.So lets get straight into it.
- First off, I’d like to make 3 points that I hope you remember well beyond this presentation itself. They are:Agile is for everyone; small, large, or somewhere in between, I’m yet to discover a project that would benefit from utilising its values and principles in some way.There are no excuses – there are however challenges, and,Challenge, like change is normal and should be embraced.I’m about to take you through a broad set of challenges, but let me state that whilst these challenges are not necessarily limited to large organisations, they can be taken to a new art form by size. Most challenges themselves are also not limited to agile, and projects following traditional waterfall SDLC’s need to overcome them as well – however agile just has a habit of surfacing them earlier. Some of these challenges you will have heard earlier in the day, some you wont, but I believe their all worth re-emphasising.
