Preface
Andre Kwok, Founder,
Future City Summit
Mark Barnekow, Executive Director,
The University of Chicago, Hong Kong
F
uture City Summit (FCS) was founded with a brave heart and vision to
impact. It was structured and progressed with a team of 30 cities in
emerging Asia and the rest of the world, with a background in
technology, public policy, academia and development finance to co-create a
new vision. What kind of people will we be in 10 years? And what will “city”
mean to us in the next 10 years?
Future City Summit Annual Meet 2019 will mark a milestone of collaboration,
development progress and regional partnership. With the establishment of
“Greater Emerging Future Cities Network”, let’s grab a visionary development
agenda for revisiting a greater role for Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area
Region in Asia.
L
eaders in the 21st
Century require an “Entrepreneurial DNA” which
allows them to embrace risk when the probability of success is slim,
make constructive connections when their proposals are met with
scepticism and deliver actionable results when stakeholders prefer to
maintain the status quo.
The Fourth Annual Future City Summit, in collaboration with The University of
Chicago, is a global summit of leaders from nations across several
continents. Future City Summit brings people together from a variety of
professional backgrounds who operate in the public and private sectors. The
Summit gives these leaders a platform to openly share ideas, envision a new
world and partner to deliver concrete outcomes.
Future City Summit leaders embrace their responsibility to improve the future
of “Future City” dwellers. They also bring with them the passion and feeling
of intense responsibility and ownership to enhance the future for their own
citizens and all humanity regardless of the country, city, neighbourhood or
street they call home.

T
he Univerity of Chicago Hong Kong Campus is home to
faculty, graduate students and undergraduates working and
studying in Hong Kong since it opened in November 2018. The
Hong Kong campus joins the University’s Centers in London, Delhi,
Beijing, and Paris in facilitating academic collaborations, research
and partnerships all over the globe.
With the institutional support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club
Charities Trust as well as support from alumni, parents and friends,
led by University Trustee Francis Yuen and his wife, Rose Yuen, the
campus is a hub for ambitious research, education and collaboration
in Hong Kong, China and the Asia Pacific Region. The campus
houses The University of Chicago Booth School of Business
Executive MBA Program and its Executive Education non-degree
courses for professionals, as well as the University’s first
undergraduate study abroad program in Hong Kong. It is also home
to Chicago Booth’s Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation
which supports the Hong Kong Jockey Club Progamme on Social
Innovation. The Rustandy Center empowers Hong Kong’s NGO and
social entrepreneurs to deliver their best work for social impact. The
Hong Kong campus also hosts academic workshops, conferences,
and public lectures, providing resource and venue for researchers,
students and alumni from all throughout Asia to convene.
The University of Chicago Hong Kong Campus is built on the
historically important site at Mount Davis, which includes The Hong
Kong Jockey Club University of Chicago Heritage Campus housing
The Hong Kong Jockey Club University of Chicago Heritage
Courtyard and Interpretation Centre. The Heritage Campus conducts
regular heritage tours and permanent and rotating exhibits
highlighting the history of the site to the public.

PMG China is based in 22 offices across 20 cities with around
12,000 partners and staff in Beijing, Changsha, Chengdu,
Chongqing, Foshan, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Haikou, Hangzhou,
Nanjing, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Wuhan,
Xiamen, Xi’an, Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR. Working
collaboratively across all these offices, KPMG China can deploy
experienced professionals efficiently, wherever our client is located.
KPMG is a global network of professional services firms providing
Audit, Tax and Advisory services. We operate in 153 countries and
territories and have 207,000 people working in member firms around
the world. The independent member firms of the KPMG network are
affiliated with KPMG International Cooperative (“KPMG
International”), a Swiss entity. Each KPMG firm is a legally distinct
and separate entity and describes itself as such.
In 1992, KPMG became the first international accounting network to
be granted a joint venture licence in mainland China. KPMG was also
the first among the Big Four in mainland China to convert from a joint
venture to a special general partnership, as of 1 August 2012.
Additionally, the Hong Kong firm can trace its origins to 1945. This
early commitment to this market, together with an unwavering focus
on quality, has been the foundation for accumulated industry
experience, and is reflected in KPMG’s appointment for multi-
disciplinary services (including audit, tax and advisory) by some of
China’s most prestigious companies.

A
sia Tatler, the region’s leading luxury media brand for the past
42 years, published by the Swiss-owned Edipresse Media
Asia (EMA), is synonymous with the most influential
personalities in society.
Fast forward to modern times, and globalisation, technology and
ease of access to capital have created a powerful entrepreneurial
class made up of passionate, driven youth.
EMA saw an opportunity to nurture this next generation of
influencers, who would one day become pillars of society, through its
areas of expertise: media, events and community.
In 2016, we launched Generation T, a new brand targeting this
audience, with the “T” representing Tatler, a homage to our brand’s
origins and a play on similar demographic groups such as Gen X and
Y. Today, our “T” also represents talent and the leaders of tomorrow.
Our first product, and today our flagship, is the “Gen.T List,” a
compendium of 400 disruptors who are redefining their industries or
breaking new ground. This list has become the definitive index of
young leaders in Asia.
Generation T operates in eight territories across Asia: Hong Kong,
Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Mainland China, Taiwan,
Thailand and Indonesia.

T
he Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry
Cooperation Zone (hereafter referred to as Qianhai) covers 15
square kilometres on the bay in the western part of the
Shenzhen city of Guangdong Province in China. Located at the core
functioning area of the Pearl River Delta, Qianhai benefits from its
close proximity to Hong Kong and Macau. With convenient
transportation and high accessibility in the future it will then take only
10 minutes to reach Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, 15
minutes to Hong Kong International Airport and 30 minutes to
Central, Hong Kong.
Qianhai is a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) within the greater SEZ of
Shenzhen. Promoted as a demonstration area for Guangdong-Hong
Kong innovation and cooperation, Qianhai serves as a pilot scheme
to develop modern service industries through pioneering
mechanisms and schemes.
The key industries in Qianhai will include financial services, modern
logistics, information services, technology, cultural and creative
industries along with related professional services. By providing a
total developed working area of about 26 million to 30 million square
metres, it is envisaged that Qianhai will become an influential centre
for service industries in the Asia-Pacific region and a global centre for
business by 2020.
Qianhai will capitalise on the proximity and strengths of Hong Kong
as a leading international financial and business centre, with its
global vision and entrenched rule of law. Through this collaboration
and partnership, Qianhai will serve as a door to further open up
Mainland China to the world. This means learning effectively from
Hong Kong's successful experiences in being one of the world's
leading business centres, with sound legal attributes, a global vision
and a thorough understanding of global market forces, Qianhai will
enhance the cooperation between Hong Kong and the Mainland and
the world through collaboration and partnership.

S
ituated on an extremely steep,
heritage-protected hillside at the
western end of Hong Kong Island,
the campus design was inspired by the
site’s challenging topography, its
magnificent panorama across the sea, and
the scattered remnants of its past as a
former military facility and detention centre.
This stunning new academic facility
presents an elegant curvilinear form that
floats lightly over the lush tree canopies,
gently weaving the academic program into
the contours of the site’s difficult terrain,
and bridging the heritage blocks to
seamlessly reconcile old and new, natural
and man-made. Evoking the impression of a
“Treehouse of Knowledge”, the new Asian
hub for the University blends effortlessly
into its surroundings and incorporates
several of the heritage buildings which have
been repurposed for classroom space,
student lounges, and building services.
