Lighting Design 101 - Wall Grazing And WashingIES Light Logic
The document discusses two lighting techniques - wall washing and wall grazing. Wall washing lights the entire wall from top to bottom at a wide angle, creating a smooth, flat appearance. Wall grazing lights the wall at a narrow angle using closer lights, accentuating texture through shadows. The techniques allow controlling how walls and spaces are perceived. Wall washing highlights smooth surfaces while wall grazing enhances textures like brick and stone.
Philip Johnson's 1949 Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut was designed in the International style. Situated on a 47-acre property, the landscape surrounding the Glass House was meant to reflect a painting of nature with areas of grass, trees, and sloping ground. The Glass House maximized views of the outdoor landscape through its dynamic use of proportion, geometry, and glass. It had a steel frame structure with minimal interior divisions besides a brick cylinder for the bathroom and fireplace, making it a single open room exposed to ventilation and lighting from all sides.
Reform movable walls and Fronté storefront systems can be used to transform boardrooms into high-performing meeting spaces with a dynamic look. Reform walls provide light and sound seals between rooms and high STC ratings for acoustic privacy. Interval posts and beams coupled with Reform panels create unique collaborative meeting spaces when whiteboard panels are added or curtains are used for privacy. Fronté is a thin, full glass panel system that offers a contemporary aesthetic. Reform glass panels with thin muntin bars provide plenty of light while maintaining privacy. Combining Reform, Interval, and Storwal storage can create inspiring private offices. Fronté doors and panels can be customized with wood veneer for aesthetic appeal. Interval is an economical system

The remodel resulted in an open feel that spans several countries.

Furnishings include white plywood tables and chairs with red upholstery seating about 50 people.
Nigeria has over 500 ethnic groups and while its population and economy are large, it still faces many problems like lack of access to sanitary water. Just over half the population has access to clean water, and thousands die each year from drinking dirty water, lowering life expectancy. To address this, the author proposed a flower-inspired structure that would capture dew in northern Nigeria and provide drinkable water, helping to unite the diverse population. The design is made of wood and bamboo and uses nylon mesh to collect dew, harvesting up to 20 gallons per structure. Placing the design in an area where three ethnic groups meet could bring people together around a shared resource of water.
James Primmer's architecture portfolio includes several university projects and professional work. One project is a theatre intervention at Seaton Delaval Hall that features an outdoor stage and retractable seating to maximize flexible use of the space. A third project is a new building for the Literary and Philosophical Society featuring a central atrium, integrated light wells around existing trees, and a rooftop debating area.

2. . regeneration .
Located on 100 Riverside Street in Savannah,
GA the objective of the assignment was to
design a corporate office headquarters for a
sustainable or non-profit organization. Del
Forte denim was founded by Tierra Del Forte
in 2005 being a 100% organic cotton line.
Through a ten week design limit the Del Forte
office was made up of two levels designed
through careful attention to lighting and
subtle details of design; surrounding the
important spacial planning through systems
furniture and a programming packet. The
end result was an office mimicking the
ideas of sustainablity, eco-luxury, and how
each space responds from one to the next.
Materiality and focal areas were determined
through collaboration within the group and
through extensive research on the client,
Tierra Del Forte.

The existing structure can be seen in the walls color
coded orange including columns, egress stairs
located on the north and south side of the building
as well as the bathrooms. Basing the project off
of a grid created through 45 and 90 degree angles
the new walls added through the space lead you
through a circulation of the building that is not only
on the outer ring, but also in the central areas of
the plan. Limiting the new walls to a minimum was
key in keeping this structure a sustainable office
area that can easily be changed into a new space if
needed in the future.
. sections .
Being responsible for the
third level of the two-level
assignment, the challenge was
to keep a cohesiveness when
navigating through the space.
. With the ability to already
have existing large windows
throughout the existing structure,
the use of natural light throughout
the day would be utilized while
then enhancing the space with
decorative, task and general
lighting.
4. . collaboration time .
The brainstorming areas are another way of
bring employees together to be able to come
up with new ideas in a different setting other
than a conference room. The brainstorming
areas create for del forte corporate offices have
custom storage areas that also duel as white
boards with a prisma-plex front that can be
written on. The doors are sliding with on on the
left side that can pop out and then be tucked
into the side for full movement.
On the walls, a subtle decorative element of
using a matte on bottom and then using del
forte’s logo on top in a high gloss. By doing this
the light will hit and display the feature however
it is not too overwhelming and distracting for
the space to serve its purpose.
. brainstorming area
The space has hookups for
laptops as well as plenty
of display space for pin-
ups. The furniture used is
a mixture of custom made
and steelcase.
5. . adding personality .
From a conceptual sketch, to a more linear
concept, a custom light fixture came to
life. Created with light block that has prism
qualities, this decorative fixture catches the
light which then reflects the light to create
multiple colors to shine throughout the space.
The custom fixture was also created off of the
45 and 90 degree grid that was established
through the new building plan of the interior
walls. While trying to incorporate the columns
of the space into the design.
The display cases located in the cafe area
and throughout also are part of a concept to
create visual barriers other than walls. What
also makes this a nice visual is because it
can duel up as a place where items can be
put on display for inspiration, newly produced
products as well as even being left blank to
create a simplisitic look. Where these are very
prominent would be in the break/coffee area
where they really create barriers from the main
circulation of the building .
