A study of 238 patients from ICUs in several European countries found that 9.2% experienced posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) two months after discharge. The factors that increased the risk of PTSD were deep sedation, physical restraint without sedation, and recall of delusional memories experienced in the ICU. A history of previous psychological problems also indirectly increased the risk of PTSD by making patients more likely to experience delusional memories and deep sedation. Further research is still needed to determine if changes in ICU practices could reduce PTSD risk or if efforts should focus on helping patients after discharge.
