Deckers Brands, the parent company of UGG, transformed its business model to focus on omni-channel retail and putting the customer at the center. It aligned previously separate retail, digital, and wholesale groups to share goals and data across all sales channels. Initiatives like Infinite UGG allow customers to view and purchase products not available in stores. The company's Magic Carpet and Digital Store Solution further blend the online and in-store shopping experiences through interactive displays and buy online/pickup in store options. Deckers leverages customer data from all channels to continuously improve brand experiences.

If you ARE familiar with the term or at least understand the concept of Showrooming, then you will not want to miss out on this session full of the latest studies, rich data, best practices and ideas.
This presentation will not only get you up to speed on the latest and most important statistics around this common consumer action, but before you leave – you’ll understand and learn…

2. How to leverage technology and tablets (you already have) to your advantage by injecting it into your traditional “road to the sale” to build trust and regain control. Ultimately selling more vehicles while optimizing gross on the front end and selling more products on the back end.
3. What (free) applications you need pre-loaded on your dealerships mobile tablets that will re-establish a new and more effective workflow and process on your showroom floor.
4. Reduce sales employee churn by empowering your staff with instant knowledge and customer decision data that help them quickly achieve success right at the tip of their fingers - literally.
Other sessions may utilize this up and coming buzzword “showrooming” to educate you and offer different services, cutting edge marketing technology and the importance of mobile website design. While all very important, “Mobile Workflow and the Showroom Process of the Future” will prepare you long term on how adapt and change your overall strategy
Not only will your customers LOVE the new experience, but your sales team will instantly appreciate how much more effective and confident they become. Ultimately resulting in MORE than just another sale.

At every touchpoint, physical or digital, your customer is forming a single opinion on the value of their experience. As customers don't live in channels, global retailers have started moving beyond Omni-Channel strategies that, in many cases, focused on the channels as an end point rather than providing a true seamless experience.
During his Australian Retail Tour, Josh Sigel (former CIO of Natural Markets Food Group) shared how he created ‘Multiplex Retailing’ to improve customer value and sales by revolutionising the way customers buy groceries and cooked meals.
Key Takeaways:
-Point of Sale is going away and will become a value added Point of Experience
-Channel based solutions will be integrated to create Multiplex brand experiences

What's In Store for In-Store Digital - BWW - 2009Michael Stich
Today’s consumers live in a digital world.
Product reviews, price comparisons, and smart recommendations are their baseline expectations. And consumers are more time-crunched than ever, with leisure time declining from 26 hours per week in 1973 to 16 today according to a recent Harris Poll. With more to do, and less time to do it in, it’s no wonder that today’s consumers demand greater personalization and selection in the products they buy, and more efficiency in how they buy them.
Retailers are working to meet these needs by bringing digital inside the store and are seeking in essence to become a “Digital Concierge” that guides and serves the shopper. However, bringing digital conveniences into the store is a complicated challenge, one that requires the right principles to succeed.
In this presentation, Bridge Worldwide provides a landscape assessment and framework with seven principles for success for Digital In-Store.

The mobile in-store revolution: If Amazon is taking my customers what I can do about it? What’s working, what’s just hype, and what is coming?
•In this session we will cover how the mobile phone is being used today by consumers to aid their in-store purchasing process.
•We will discuss the in-store research renegades who are using bar code scanners and google search to find better deals while they’re in the store. Is all this gaming and check-in technology hype or valuable?
•How is mobile NFC technology going to impact the checkout process?
•Where does mCommerce fit into the store environment? Is anyone going to scan a QR code while standing in a store
The death of brick-and-mortar stores has been greatly exaggerated and has changed the business among legacy players. Leading retailers maximize digital touchpoints and revamp store experiences, while those without a clear strategy fall exponentially further behind. Retailers must cater to an omnichannel world by internalizing the customer-first mindset and blending digital and physical commerce via tools like live in-store inventory, localized search results, drive-to-store, display ads and more.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Deckers Brands Wows Customers Online and Off
1. Case Study
RETAIL
DECKERS BRANDS
Wows Customers
Online and Off
The parent company of the UGG
brand uses innovative omni-
channel technologies to put the customer at the
center of the shopping experience.
Retail capabilities that were only recently considered groundbreaking, such as buy
online/pick up in store and endless aisle, are fast becoming commonplace among
leading retailers.
That’s a tipping point that Deckers Brands, a global multi-brand portfolio company
with the brands UGG®, Teva®, Sanuk®, HOKA One One® and Ahnu® knows all
too well. The company is in the midst of transforming its business for omni-channel
commerce, putting customers at the center of all its activities to ensure a consistent
and powerful brand experience across all channels.
“Omni-channel isn’t just a catchphrase for Deckers, it’s an integral part of our culture
of innovation and our retail strategy,” said Dave Powers, president of brands for
Deckers brands.
START WITH ORGANIZATIONAL ALIGNMENT
To begin the transformation, Deckers aligned its previously siloed commerce groups
under a single umbrella, says John Kalinich, senior vice president of omni-channel
operations and ecommerce for Deckers Brands.
“Before our organizational change, we spoke to the customer by channel, with
people, processes and technology aligned relative to that channel,” says Kalinich.
“However, there is no difference between a retail customer and an ecommerce
customer. It’s the same customer.”
Deckers shifted its philosophy to view customers through the prism of their
relationship to the brand rather than sales channel. To do this, retail, digital commerce
and wholesale groups were combined under common leadership with common goals
and incentives.
“Physical stores are
quietly evolving through
the integration of digital
innovations, ultimately
vying to offer customers
a true omni-channel
environment.”
