Joshua was appointed by Moses to lead the Israelites after Moses' death. As a warrior-leader, Joshua led the Israelites in many battles to claim the land God had promised them. During one battle, Joshua asked God to stop the sun and moon so the Israelites could win in daylight, and God answered his prayer. Joshua believed God's promise that He would be with Joshua as He was with Moses. God parted the River Jordan for Joshua and gave him instructions to take the city of Jericho, which worked when Joshua followed them.
