Guest speaker Terry Nichols shared a message titled, "Names In Scripture" and discussed the significance of names and how God often changed names to reflect a changed life. He goes further to give the back story of the name of Jesus and why His name is the only name by which we can be saved.

42. The word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri…When the
LORD began to speak through Hosea, the LORD said to him, “Go,
marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an
adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the LORD.”
Hosea 1:1-9 (NIV)
43. So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.
Then the LORD said to Hosea, “Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the
house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of
Israel. In that day I will break Israel’s bow in the Valley of Jezreel.”
Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the LORD said to
Hosea, “Call her Lo-Ruhamah, for I will no longer show love to Israel, that I should
at all forgive them. Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them—not by bow,
sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the LORD their God, will save
them.” After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, Gomer had another son. Then the
LORD said, “Call him Lo-Ammi for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”
Hosea 1:1-9 (NIV)
51. Luke 1:11-20; 1:57-60
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of
the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was
gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,
Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear
you a son, and you are to call him John…And he will go on before the
Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to
their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to
make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
(NIV)
52. Luke 1:11-20; 1:57-60
When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a
son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her
great mercy, and they shared her joy. On the eighth day they came to
circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father
Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called
John.” They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has
that name.” Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he
would like to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet, and to
everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”
(NIV)
56. This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary
was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together,
she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not
want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her
quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared
to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to
take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from
the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:18-25(NIV)
57. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him
Immanuel" (which means "God with us").
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had
commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son.
And he gave him the name Jesus.
Matthew 1:18-25(NIV)
