As Christians it is so important for us to discern and accept all truth, so we need to be aware of the false arguments that can interfere with accepting the truth and honestly following God.

A verse by verse commentary on JOHN chapter 9 dealing with the miracle of healing the man born blind and the Pharisees investigation of this miracle. Jesus condemns them of being blind.
The movie "It's a Wonderful Life" focuses on two contrasting characters, the miserly Mr. Potter and the generous Peter Bailey. In this sermon we will explore generosity and ask the question, what would happen in the realm of generosity and benevolence, if Jesus had never been born.

How do you define presumption? How does presumptive judging of others and planning for the future show pride and arrogance? How does presumption judge and reject God? What is the difference between constructive criticism, slander and condemnation? What is our attitude toward God and His law when we speak against a brother or sister in Christ? What warning did James give to those who presumptively plan for the future? How does presumptive planning show pride and arrogance? How do you define sin? How does James define sin? (4:17) How is his definition different from yours?

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

4. To Honor God
We Must Use Wise Reasoning
Romans 1:21-22 Common English Bible
21 Although they knew God, they didn’t honor God as
God or thank him. Instead, their reasoning became
pointless, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 While
they were claiming to be wise, they made fools of
themselves.

5. What is a logical fallacy?
A fallacy is an idea which many people believe to
be true, but which is in fact false because it is
based on incorrect information or reasoning.

6. We Can Deceive Ourselves
James 1:22 Common English Bible
You must be doers of the word and not only hearers who
mislead themselves.
6
7. We Are Individually Responsible
2 Timothy 2:15 Common English Bible
15 Make an effort to present yourself to God as a tried-
and-true worker, who doesn’t need to be ashamed but is
one who interprets the message of truth correctly.
7
8. Ad Hominem Fallacy
This means “against the man.”
This type of fallacy is sometimes called name calling or the
personal attack fallacy. This type of fallacy occurs when
someone attacks the person instead of attacking his or her
argument.
8
9. Ad Hominem Fallacy
Ephesians 4:29 Common English Bible
Don’t let any foul words come out of your mouth. Only
say what is helpful when it is needed for building up the
community so that it benefits those who hear what you say.
9
10. Types of Ad Hominem Fallacies #1
Abusive - This is where the person is directly attacked.
Proverbs 30:33 NKJV
For as the churning of milk produces butter, And wringing
the nose produces blood, So the forcing of wrath produces
strife.
10
11. Types of Ad Hominem Fallacies #2
Circumstantial - Personal circumstances motivate a
person's argument, so it must be false.
Proverbs 16:2 NKJV
All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes,
But the Lord weighs the spirits.
11
12. Types of Ad Hominem Fallacies #3
Guilt by Association - Due to an association to something
negative, an argument is discredited.
Mark 2:16 NKJV
And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with
the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples,
“How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and
sinners?”
12
13. Types of Ad Hominem Fallacies #4
Tu Quoque - Past actions discredit your argument.
Matthew 15:1-3 NKJV
Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem
came to Jesus, saying, 2 “Why do Your disciples transgress
the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their
hands when they eat bread.”
13
14. Four Types of Ad Hominem Fallacies
Abusive - This is where the person is directly attacked.
Circumstantial - Personal circumstances motivate a
person's argument, so it must be false.
Guilt by Association - Due to an association to something
negative, an argument is discredited.
Tu Quoque - Past actions discredit your argument.
14
15. Red Herring Fallacy
The red herring is an attempt to divert the attention away
from the relevant issue by introducing another, irrelevant
issue.
It is an intentionally made distraction to move the
argument or a question to a different issue that is easier to
respond to.
15
16. Red Herring Fallacy
Matthew 15:1-2 NKJV
Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem
came to Jesus, saying, 2 “Why do Your disciples transgress
the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their
hands when they eat bread.”
16
17. Straw Man Fallacy
The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply
ignores a person’s actual position and substitutes a
distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that
position.
17
18. Straw Man Fallacy
Titus 3:9 NKJV
But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and
strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and
useless.
18
19. Bandwagon Fallacy
A bandwagon fallacy is a type of argumentative fallacy that
is based on an appeal to popular belief and behavior, not
on valid and logical points.
An argument based on this fallacy usually bears a format
similar to "everyone else believes this, so it must be true" or
"everyone else does this, so it must be right.“
19
20. Bandwagon Fallacy
Matthew 7:13 NKJV
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is
the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who
go in by it.
20
21. Slippery Slope Fallacy
A slippery slope argument refers to a logical fallacy,
meaning a flaw in reasoning that weakens an argument.
It happens when someone asserts that a certain proposition
or action must be rejected because it would have
unintended consequences, typically leading to a disastrous
outcome.
21
22. Slippery Slope Fallacy
Proverbs 26:13 NKJV
The lazy man says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce
lion is in the streets!”
22
23. Appeal to Nature Fallacy
The appeal to nature is a logical fallacy that occurs when
something is claimed to be good because it’s perceived as
natural, or bad because it’s perceived as unnatural.
23
24. Appeal to Nature Fallacy
Genesis 1:31 NKJV
Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it
was very good…
Genesis 2:15 NKJV
Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the
garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
24
25. What is a logical fallacy?
A fallacy is an idea which many people believe to
be true, but which is in fact false because it is
based on incorrect information or reasoning.

27. Our Individual Responsibility
I Thessalonians 5:21-22 NKJV
21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.
22 Abstain from every form of evil.
27
People choose to avoid the truth. Logical fallacies are some of the tools they use to stay willingly ignorant.
We cannot simply throw up our hands and say, “God is in charge and I really don’t have to do anything.” We are called to make decisions – God cannot use people who refuse to make good decisions.
Abusive – You are dumb and ugly – and your mother dresses you funny. This statement says nothing about the other person’s ideas. Instead, it mocks and demeans the other person.
Circumstantial – You are just saying such-and-such because you or your family will benefit from the outcome. While that statement of benefit may actually be true, it is not an analysis of the accuracy of the person’s statements.
Guilt by Association – Who can believe you? After all, you hang around with tax collectors, fallen women, and other sinners. Luke 18:9-14 The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Tu Quoque – You previously had dinner with a bad person and here is a photo to prove it, therefore we can’t believe anything you say. Matthew 15;3 3 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?
Abusive – You are dumb and ugly – and your mother dresses you funny.
But what about X? Are we distracted by the shiny thing. German grandfather took me fishing. (5 b-i-l’s who were fishermen). Fishing lures have a shiny side that attracts fish. You have three options:
You can accept the new topic of discussion and continue with it.
Disengage from the argument.
Insist on continuing with the original topic.
The distraction of the question by the scribes and Pharisees pulls people away from the truth. Read on in Matthew 15 to see how Jesus answers the question.
Do not be distracted from the truths of God by getting ties up in knots over issues that are not essential to our salvation.
The straw man is a fallacy in which an opponent's argument is overstated or misrepresented in order to be more easily attacked or refuted. You have three options:
You can accept the new topic of discussion and continue with it.
Disengage from the argument.
Insist on continuing with the original topic.
The apostle refused to fall into the Straw Man Fallacy trap. He advised simply to avoid such traps.
Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, going to church on Sunday, etc. “They can’t all be wrong. Eat Lamb. 3 million coyotes can’t be wrong. Alternately, EVERYONE doesn’t do such-and-such, therefore doing such-and-such must be wrong. This why many people have a hard time keeping the seventh-day Sabbath. Surely not almost everyone could be wrong.
Domino effect: If this happens, then _____ will happen. Sometimes it is true, but often this technique is used to exaggerate the original projected outcome.
To be fair, there is a relationship between cause and effect. However, the Slippery Slope fallacy presumes an exaggerated bad outcome, such that even the tiniest action can have a multiplier effect to produce bad results. We can label this the Fear Factor.
I grew up on a farm in Minnesota. As a farm kid we relished playing in the snow. We didn’t have mountains to ski, nor did our farm have steep hills for sledding. But we did have a tractor with a scoop bucket,, plenty of snow, and a tall granary. As young teens we piled up the snow next to the granary building using the tractor with the hydraulic loader. The granary building had a roof with a steep slope, so we took an extension ladder and laid the ladder from the ground up to the top of the roof. When we took the sled up the ladder to the top of the granary roof, we could slide down the roof – shooting through the air and land on the pile of snow that we had piled up with the tractor. Once we were sliding down the roof we picked up speed dramatically, There was no stopping. Unfortunately, our knowledge of physics was incomplete. We didn’t have a lot of room between the granary with the pile of snow and the trees in the grove. Therefore, we had to build a curve in the pile of show so when we landed we would not kill ourselves smashing into the trees. And when the snow on the room was worn down, we took a water hose and sprayed the roof so the water would freeze into ice. A sled goes really fast on ice. Somehow, none of us boys died. When Dad got home we were forbidden from climbing up on the roof anymore. Basically, the slipper slope fallacy indicates that if you even start an action, the bad results will become inevitable. This slippery slope argument is often used by pessimists to validate their concerns on every issue.
The Slippery Slope Fallacy is often an excuse to avoid doing anything at all. We have seen a lot of that in the past two years – people afraid of their own shadow and imaging and frightful outcome. Our job is to evaluate the reality of the issue and come to a rational conclusion – not simply be mislead by fear.
The Appeal to Nature Fallacy assumes that if something is a feature of the natural world, it demonstrates how God intends for humans to live or interact. We don’t see the wheel in nature, therefore the use of a wheel must be bad because it is unnatural.
People choose to avoid the truth. Logical fallacies are some of the tools they use to stay willingly ignorant.
