The DevOps movement aims to improve communication between developers and operations teams to solve critical issues such as fear of change and risky deployments. But the same way that Agile development would likely fail without continuous integration tools, the DevOps principles need tools to make them real, and provide the automation required to actually be implemented. Most of the so called DevOps tools focus on the operations side, and there should be more than that, the automation must cover the full process, Dev to QA to Ops and be as automated and agile as possible. Tools in each part of the workflow have evolved in their own silos, and with the support of their own target teams. But a true DevOps mentality requires a seamless process from the start of development to the end in production deployments and maintenance, and for a process to be successful there must be tools that take the burden out of humans.
Apache Maven has arguably been the most successful tool for development, project standardization and automation introduced in the last years. On the operations side we have open source tools like Puppet or Chef that are becoming increasingly popular to automate infrastructure maintenance and server provisioning.
In this presentation we will introduce an end-to-end development-to-production process that will take advantage of Maven and Puppet, each of them at their strong points, and open source tools to automate the handover between them, automating continuous build and deployment, continuous delivery, from source code to any number of application servers managed with Puppet, running either in physical hardware or the cloud, handling new continuous integration builds and releases automatically through several stages and environments such as development, QA, and production.
This tutorial is an introduction to Debian packaging. It teaches prospective developers how to modify existing packages, how to create their own packages, and how to interact with the Debian community. In addition to the main tutorial, it includes three practical sessions on modifying the 'grep' package, and packaging the 'gnujump' game and a Java library.

Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). “fakeroot” assigns root as owner during the creation of the package.
Or, we don’t care at all and just fix it via postinst ;)

target/ will contain the final package
Why not put DOC/* under ROOT, like Debian asks you to?
- Too lazy to find and update files every time. Script copies them over for me.

Do you need to update the package information?
YES! At least change the name of the package!
Make sure the maintainer’s scripts are up-to-date.
It’s mandatory to have postinst and prerm scripts, even if they don’t do anything

21. 4. Build time?
Wait, wait, wait.
What does this script do?
All the boring bits:
- preflight checks
- creates dir structure
- copies doc, metadata and content (ROOT) to the correct places in the structure
- fixes permissions
- compresses files (yes, some need to be compressed)
- creates the actual package
The actual build command (once everything is in place):
fakeroot makes root owner of all files in the package, no sudo needed:

Prerequisite files:
1. one or more binary executable or shell script files
2. a man page for each executable file
3. a 'control' file
4. a 'copyright' file
5. a 'changelog' and 'changelog.Debian' file
Setup temporary 'debian' directories:
1. create 'debian/usr/bin' directory (or wherever you plan to place your executable files)
2. create 'debian/usr/share/man/man1' (or whatever section your man page belongs into)
3. create 'debian/DEBIAN' directory
4. create 'debian/usr/share/doc/<package_name>'
5. make sure all sub directories of 'debian' have file permission 0755
Copy files into temporary 'debian' tree:
1. copy executable file into 'debian/usr/bin' directory (or wherever you plan to place your executable files)
2. copy man page file into 'debian/usr/share/man/man1' directory
3. copy 'control' file into 'debian/DEBIAN' directory
4. copy 'copyright', 'changelog', and 'changelog.Debian' files into 'debian/usr/share/doc/<package_name>'
5. gzip man page, 'copyright', 'changelog', and 'changelog.Debian' files with option '--best' inside the temporary 'debian' tree
Build and check binary Debian package:
1. invoke 'dpkg-deb --build' using 'fakeroot' on the 'debian' directory
2. rename resulting 'debian.deb' file to its final package name including version and architecture information
3. check resulting .deb package file for Debian policy compliance using 'lintian'
