Design embeds ideas in communication, artifacts and spaces in subtle and psychologically powerful ways. Feminist, class, race and indigenous scholars and activists describe how oppressions (how patriarchy, racism, colonialism, etc.) exist within institutions and also within cultural practices. The theory of symbolic violence sheds light on how design can function to naturalise oppressions and then obfuscate power relations around this process. Through symbolic violence, design can function as an enabler for the exploitation of certain groups of people and the environment they (and ultimately ‘we’) depend on to live. Design functions as symbolic violence when it is involved with the creation and reproduction of ideas, practices, processes and tools that result in structural and other types of violence (including ecocide).
Presentation and conversation at the Design Research Society 2016's Design + Research + Society: Future Focused Thinking conference. The University of Brighton. Why our future lies in ecosystems and what is going to support itJean-Yves Huwart
We are in the early stage of multiple shift where organisations will move from a traditional top-down way of working towards framed, opened and networked ecosystems.
Zoltán Kolozsváry: The critical role of education in the chain of innovation-...CUBCCE Conference
The enormous challenges at the beginning of the 21st Century by the unprecedented development in science and technology- especially the information technology- put an ever-increasing pressure on education. Preserving the traditional human values -culture, social life, family – without slowing down the rate of innovation is an enormous challenge which needs an upgraded education from grammar school to academic level.
The paper presents a few critical questions faced by the education in the present “transitory” period aiming to try to find an equilibrium between the expectations of multinational giants and the general public. Orientation, politics in applied research and connection to the industrial application especially in advanced SME-s are briefly outlined. A few ideas on possible solutions are summarized.

Gemeinsam Miteinander - Integration von geflüchteten Menschen #RefugeesWelcome World Café Europe
Ergebnispräsentation von unserem World Café "Gemeinsam Miteinander": Am 11.

Science embraces reductionist thinking:
A complex system is nothing but the sum of its parts
…I could behold the antechapel
where the statue stood
Of Newton with his prism and
silent face,
The marble index of a mind for
ever
Voyaging through strange seas
of Thought, alone.

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity
transformed 20th century science:
The limit of reductionism's usefulness was reached
To raise new questions,
new possibilities,
To regard new problems
from a new angle,
Requires creative imagination
and marks a real advance in science.

A new kind of mind

Dialogue among people in small groups:
When the system connects with itself in creative ways,
collective intelligence emerges
We haven’t really paid much
attention to thought as a process.
We have engaged in thoughts,
but we have only paid attention
to the content, not to the process.
