Wiley’s Education Services (WES) leverages a mix of CMS platforms across their 50+ student information sites for major universities throughout the world. Traditionally these sites have been housed as part of a multi-site CMS install on a single VM, and eventually across 2 VMs. Failure of either one of these VMs would mean an outage for one or all of the hosted sites. As Wiley’s leadership looked forward, they recognized the risks involved with their current design and identified Docker as a way to mitigate these risks. WES began their investigation in to Docker to address issues of fault tolerance, consistency, and portability. They used this opportunity to modernize their workflows and reduce risk by promoting Docker images through their dev, preview, and production environments using CI/CD. This increased their confidence in deployments and reduced the need for maintenance windows. Early in the process, WES brought in BoxBoat as subject matter experts to accelerate their migration, and architect their Docker EE solution. Through the use of well-defined workflows and persistent storage, applications are continually redeployed and restored between environments with zero downtime and no loss of data. Additionally developers can pull down and run any of the sites independently with configuration that matches production. Jason Brown - Program Manager, Entergy Jeff Hummel - IT Infrastructure, Architect, Entergy Entergy, a large utility company headquartered in New Orleans, LA has launched an initiative to modernize their application infrastructure. During the initial analysis, Entergy recognized the existing legacy infrastructure’s lack of compatibility with more recent operating systems would stand in the way of progress. As a result, containerization was fast-tracked as the solution that can help them with the various tenants of their strategy: hyperconvergence, SaaS (ServiceNow), and workload portability. Docker Enterprise proved to be the right solution to migrate roughly 850 legacy applications from Windows Server 2003 and 2008 to Windows Server 2016 quickly, securely and economically. Entergy IT has now delivered the ability for the business to run applications on-premise, in the cloud, and future-proofed the applications for migration to new versions of Windows Server. DevNexus 2015 Docker: containerizing a monolithic app into a microservice-based PaaS Convert a monolithic application into a microservice-based PaaS using Docker and related, containerization technologies. This will be the third presentation of a series of presentations that began greater than one year ago to evangelize the benefits of Docker. The scope of content spans from a development environment to a hybrid PaaS, and how Containerization is an enabler of architectural choice, innovation, scalability, and polyglot solutions. The basics of Docker will be examined including repositories, brief discussion about managing and monitoring Docker containers, service discovery, and security. New and emerging technologies will be a constant theme, particularly about microservices, in addition to the ongoing evolution of the market and what the future may bring. Common organizational issues (and tactical solutions) that may impede successful decomposition and migration of legacy monoliths will be discussed, including security, DevOps and refactoring. Hypothetical architectures will be described for building progressively more robust and complex applications and deployment models. The goal is to highlight the power, flexibility and scalability that containers enable. Examples will start simple, from a local development environment, that is a simple two container setup that encapsulate a database and application tier. Subsequent discussion will involve progressively more complex and robust deployments that include features such as service discovery, automatic load balancing, and abstractions to simplify linking of containers including service gateways. DON'T PANIC: GETTING YOUR INFRASTRUCTURE DRIFT UNDER CONTROL, ERAN BIBI, Firefly

In your ever-changing Infrastructure, some changes are intentional while others are not. Drift is what happens whenever the real-world state of your infrastructure differs from the state defined in your configuration. This can happen for many reasons, sometimes it happens when adding or removing resources, other times when changing resource definitions upon resource termination or failure, and even when changes have been made manually or via other automation tools. While Terraform itself can detect drifts, in most cases, you will be informed about it too late: just before you are about to deploy new changes to your infrastructure. What’s interesting about Terraform though, is that you can apply changes in two separate and distinct steps of “Planning” and “Applying”. This means that you have full visibility of what Terraform is planning on doing beforehand, and if you are satisfied with the changes, you can choose to apply them. So how does this work? When something is changed intentionally, it will appear in the source code, and the Terraform plan will not do anything. However, if any part of the infrastructure has been changed manually, Terraform’s plan will identify this, and alert you to the change. In other words, if your IaC drifted from its expected state, then Terraform’s plan will, in fact, detect it. Applying this simple solution can empower DevOps and developer velocity, with the reassurance and context for unexpected changes in your IaC, in near real-time. This talk will showcase real-world examples, and practical ways to apply this in your production environments while doing so safely and at the pace of your engineering cycles.

DCSF 19 Microservices API: Routing Across Any Infrastructure

Alex Hokanson + Brett Inman, Docker Microservice architectures can be difficult to implement. Specifically how to route to the a service correctly and ensure that traffic is spread across all instances of that service. What happens in a cloud environment where it is normal to lose and gain service instances as a part of daily operations? How do you configure something to be able to consistently route to your service when you don’t even know where your service is running!? At Docker, we developed our own highly available and automated API server on top of HAProxy with deep integration with Consul. Our API server acts as a service discovery and load balancing service to ensure availability in a highly dynamic environment. In addition to running such a complex application, we need to support thousands of requests per second while being able to monitor every request that comes through--that is no small feat! In addition to running a highly available API server, we also recently migrated it from running natively on Ubuntu 14.04 to run all components inside of containers by using Kubernetes with Docker Enterprise. With the containerization journey came some benefits along with new challenges that were not foreseen.

We will discuss techniques, methodologies, and thought processes used to analyze, design, and execute a migration strategy and implementation plan -- from planning through rollout and operational. An important aspect of this is the necessity for technical staff to effectively communicate to mid-level management how these design decisions and strategies translate into cost, complexity and schedule. Commonly used migration strategies, cloud technologies, architecture options, and low level technologies will be discussed. The case will be made that investing in strategic refactoring and decomposition during the migration will reap the benefits of a modern, decoupled and simplified system. The end game being alignment and adoption of current best practices around PaaS, Saas, SOA, event-driven architectures, and message-oriented middleware, at scale in the cloud, to provide quantifiable business value. This talk will focus more on the big picture, at times delving into technical architectures and discussion of certain technologies and service providers. Use of Containers (Docker) is evangelized for decoupling and decomposing legacy systems.

The new Migrate module in Drupal 8 core is great for upgrading sites from Drupal 6 to Drupal 8. But it's useful for a lot more than just that! Migrate adds the power of any external tool to your content workflow. Not every client is accustomed to using Drupal. Some clients might like Google Spreadsheets; others prefer Markdown files in version control. Using Migrate, you can let your clients use their preferred content building tools—even before you have a Drupal site ready for them! I'll talk about my experiences with several different Migrate-based workflows that we've used at Evolving Web. There's already information out there about building migrations, but most of it focuses on very limited use cases: direct upgrades, or simple nodes. I'll cover many other bits and pieces you need for real-life migration projects, including: * Hierarchical menus * Paths and redirects * Multilingual data * Files and images * Merging multiple migrations * Writing custom migration sources and transformations * Figuring out why your migration isn't working Attendees with some PHP experience will get the most out of this talk—but many parts will be interesting to site builders and project managers as well.

Mandy Whaley, CISCO Microservices create an explosion of internal and external APIs. These APIs need great docs. Many organizations end up with a jungle of wiki pages, swagger docs and api consoles, and maybe just a few secret documents trapped in chat room somewhere… Keeping docs updated and in sync with code can be a challenge. We’ve been working on a project at Cisco DevNet to help solve this problem for engineering teams across Cisco. The goal is to create a forward looking developer and API doc publishing pipeline that: Has a developer friendly editing flow Accepts many API spec formats (Swagger, RAML, etc) Supports long form documentation in markdown Is CI/CD pipeline friendly so that code and docs stay in sync Flexible enough to be used by a wide scope of teams and technologies We have many interesting lessons learned about tooling and how to solve documentation challenges for internal and external facing APIs. We have found that solving this doc publishing flow is a key component of a building modern infrastructure. This is most definitely a culture + tech + ops + dev story, we look forward to sharing with the DevOps Days community.

The Cadenza application that powers ScalaCourses.com is a Play Framework 2 application, written in Scala and using Akka, Slick, AWS and Postgres. Some of the architectural features in Cadenza that allow a modest-sized Play application to serve large amounts of multimedia data efficiently is discussed, including technical details of how to work with an immutable domain model that can be modified. Over the last 2+ years the underlying technology has changed a lot; a brief history of Play Framework will be recounted, and how that impacted Cadenza. (2) "Headless" Drupal: Drupal as a backend with multiple frontends. Drupal's theming layer is difficult to master and expensive to upgrade between major releases. We will discuss how the frontend and backend can be decoupled to provide better experiences for users, developers, and designers alike. (3) Content as a service. Decoupling isn't just about separating the frontend from the backend or making upgrades easier. In fact, the real power of headless Drupal is separating content from presentation, allowing you to connect any number of websites, channels, or devices to a single source of content through an API! (4) TWiT.tv case study. We'll close by discussing how Four Kitchens work with This Week in Tech to relaunch TWiT.tv as a decoupled Drupal site with an exposed API allowing their fanbase to directly access content. The last few years has seen an abundance of deep learning and general machine learning frameworks, and such frameworks have created deep impacts to the machine learning industry. In this talk, Yangqing shares and discusses lessons we learned from building deep learning and general machine learning framework designs in the last few years, and share thoughts and philosophy in building the next generation of machine learning solutions for the AI industry. When applicable he draws examples from Caffe, a widely adopted deep learning framework that has evolved to serve computer vision, speech recognition, natural language understanding.

Anyone interested in building a deep learning model is only a quick search away from a number of clear and well written tutorials that will take them from zero knowledge to having a working image classifier. But what happens when you need to deploy these models in a production setting? At Salesforce, we use TensorFlow models to help us provide customers with insights into their data, and we do this as close to real-time as possible. Designing these systems in a scalable manner requires overcoming a number of design challenges, but the core component is Docker. Docker enables us to design highly scalable systems by allowing us to focus on service interactions, rather than how our services will interact with the hardware. Docker is also at the core of our test infrastructure, allowing developers and data scientists to build and test the system in an end to end manner on their local machines. While some of this may sound complex, the core message is simplicity - Docker allows us to focus on the aspects of the system that matter, greatly simplifying our lives.

In this session, Clemente Biondo, the Tech Lead of the Information Systems Department, will share how his company is reacting to this unforeseeable scenario and how Docker-driven digital transformation had paved the path for work to continue remotely. Clemente will discuss learnings moving from colocated teams, manual approaches, email based-business processes, and a monolithic application to a mature DevOps culture characterized by a distributed autonomous workforce and a continuous deployment process that deploys backward-compatible Docker containerized microservices into hybrid multi cloud datacenters an average of twice a day with zero-downtime. He will detail how they use Docker to unify dev, test and production environments, and as an efficient and automated mechanism for deploying applications. Lastly, Clemente shares how, in our darkest hour, he and others are working to shine their brightest light.

Chris Lauer, NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center - This is the story of how adopting a containerized workflow changed the way our small software team works at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. Our old architecture, a big ball of mud shared-database integration, just wasn’t cutting it - it was killing our agility. Over the past two years, our small team has adopted a microservice style architecture, using Docker with docker-compose and environment files as our deployment strategy for all new development. We’ve discovered the joys of using containers for identical dev, staging, and production environments. We work closely with scientists: much of the code we’re running has complicated and conflicting library dependencies. Docker captures these beautifully - we’ve even had some success teaching our scientists to use it! I’ll share what we’ve learned, some of the persistent challenges we face, and one place we really got it wrong. This talk builds off of a popular hallway track from DockerCon 2019.

Ashish Sharma, SS&C Eze - SS&C Eze provides various products in the stock market domain. We spent the last couple of years building Eclipse which is an investment suite born in cloud. The journey so far has been very interesting. The very first version of the product were a bunch of monolithic windows services and deployed using Octopus tool. We successfully managed to bring all the monolithic problem to the cloud and created a nightmare for ourselves. We then started applying microservices architecture principles and started breaking the monolithic into small services. Very soon we realized that we need a better packaging/deployment tool. Docker looked like a magical solution to our problem. Since its adoption, It has not only solved the deployment problem for us but has made a deep impact on different aspects of SDLC. It allowed us to use heterogeneous technology stacks, simplified development environment setup, simplified our testing strategy, improved our speed of delivery, and made our developers more productive. In this talk I would like to share our experience of using Docker and its positive impact on our SDLC.

When Datadog adopted Kubernetes we discovered some of these boundaries the hard way, and we continuously challenge and modify our infrastructure decisions in order to fit our use case. Join me in this talk for our story on what we learned while we scaled our Kubernetes clusters, the contributions to Kubernetes we made along the way, and how you can apply those learnings when growing your Kubernetes clusters from a handful to hundreds or thousands of nodes.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
