The strong position of some online platforms like Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple (GAFA) has triggered a public debate about their economic dominance, notorious data collection and massive pull on users. The White Book published by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) highlights just how important this matter is to policy makers in Germany.
Surprisingly, the public debate is more often than not void of scientific insights into the subject matter. There is a lack of evidence about the actual economic and societal impact of online platforms. Even a consistent and clear definition of online platforms is missing from the debate.
A proper analysis of online platforms and their impact is needed to correctly identify if there is any call to action for policy makers or regulators.
The present research brief provides an overview of the economic and societal impact of online platforms in Germany. It adheres to the economic definition of platforms as multi-sided markets. Consequently, the technological concept of platforms is not considered here.
Based on a comprehensive review of the economic literature, we develop a new approach that enables consistent analysis of online platform business models, taking full account of their complexity. Nonetheless, our approach is intuitive and easy to understand, making comparison of various online platforms straightforward.
To achieve this, our approach draws on the concept of business model analysis put forward by Osterwalder and Pigneur (2010). It captures the most relevant interactions between the various user groups of online platforms, referring to data, revenue and attention. The results of this analysis informed the Green and White Books published by the BMWi on online platforms.

events, news and industry analysis in the Big Data arena.

Opportunities:
Dataconomy offers a platform for companies to reach into the crucial crossover between Data
Science and Business. Big Data is driving tremendous growth in the tech industry, but this rapid
development has created a disconnect between the practitioners and the business side who are
figuring out how these technologies can best be applied.
Dataconomy covers the business applications of Big Data across a range of industries, including
Healthcare, Retail, Automotive, Finance, and Energy. We help pioneering brands share their
success stories, and host expert commentary from leading experts in Data Science, Machine
Learning, Business Intelligence, Database Technology, from techncial and business perspectives.
Headquartered in Berlin, and with ties to the US, Dataconomy has the unique position of being a
leading media organisation with access to the booming Big Data industry on both sides of the
Atlantic. In addition to providing a leading portal for Big Data news, Dataconomy runs regular
industry events, uniting local Big Data communities in an effort to share knowledge and expand
networks.

Business & Tech Our audience is interested in the applications and implications of data science -
The innovations that are enabled by technology, rather than the technology enabling innovations.
Not Product Centric You can mention your product as a part of your talk, but this is not an
opportunity for a sales pitch. Inspiring stories are more engaging and memorable.

Big Data Berlin – The Biggest Big Data Meetup in Germany
On the 28th of August, 2014, the Big Data community of Berlin came together in the aptly named
Innospace (Innovation Space) for Big Data, Berlin. Over 350 people attended, providing an
incredible cross-section of business and data science interests from Europe’s Silicon Valley.
The venue — which usually caters to a max audience of 200 people — was filled with developers,
innovators and executives. The objective? To network, collaborate and interact. The unprecedented
turnout made this the largest big data event in Berlin.
Unlike other events the capital has hosted, Big Data, Berlin was aimed at bringing the whole of big
data ecosystem together under one roof — from business professionals to software developers and
data enthusiasts. “In Berlin there are events that are very tech focussed and there needs to be an
event that appeals to a general audience. This event fills that need,” Adam Drake explained.
Three of Berlin’s leading thinkers – Adam Drake, Rafaella Rein and Lars Trieloff – shared their
opinions about Big Data’s impact on business and society. One of the main reasons so many of
Berlin’s brightest minds were magnetised to the event, was the star speaker: Doug Laney. Currently
working as the VP for Gartner, Laney is the man who invented the 3 V’s of Big Data- a definition still
widely used, 13 years after its conception.
Dataconomy’s Editor, Rohan Patil, explained that this event was only the beginning. Big Data, Berlin
is designed as an initiative to “bring the Berlin big data community on one platform,” he said.
They’re already planning their next gathering, slated for the 23rd October. One week later, the
franchise is bringing their blend of data science and business acumen to Munich, for the inaugural
evening of Big Data Munich.
