Peer-to-peer solar microgrids are being built in rural Bangladesh using a mobile payment-enabled device called SOLbox that allows individuals with solar home systems and those without access to electricity to exchange power. This solves the problem of 800,000 kWh of daily excess energy from individual solar systems going to waste by creating a platform for flexible energy access. Producers can sell extra energy and consumers only pay for what they use, saving up to 35% compared to other options. The project aims to empower communities through new income opportunities from trading solar power and attracts customers to local shops with brighter lighting.
