Several cities and towns claim to be the origin of Memorial Day, which was first practiced on May 30, 1868 and recognized as a holiday in New York in 1873. Waterloo, New York was declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon B. Johnson in May 1966. Memorial Day began as a day to honor fallen soldiers after the U.S. Civil War.
